Songs that include Skateboarding

Friday, April 29th, 2016

Being a skateboarder often involves random pissed up people shouting various lyrics from songs we all know and maybe don’t appreciate that include the topic, skateboarding. Considering there’s a fair few different ones I though I would put a collection together of songs that include skateboarding. You never know, this may also influence a decent playlist for your iPod to get down and dirty too whilst out and about shredding and it might even teach some of us the lyrics so we can join in with the public when they scream the song at us.

To start off with we have the dreaded Avril Lavigne song, ‘Skater Boy’. When this was released you could literally have the whole song sang at you whilst cruising through the streets. I mean most of us probably never actually heard the original, we just know it from when it’s being shouted at us from alcohol intoxicated humans. We don’t exactly skate past pubs screaming the lyrics from Oasis’s ‘Cigarettes and Alcohol’ song, or do we?

In the late 2000’s Lupe Fiasco graced skate shops all over the world with ‘Kick Push’. I felt like it was more accepted in the skate community because it was a hip hop track, but my god was it cheese, and mature cheddar cheese to say the least. I do not want to listen to or have anything dedicated to all my ‘Homies out there grinding’. I may be being a little harsh with this one and I probably enjoyed it for the first few times but now when this track comes on, simply skip the track man. Don’t get me wrong, the rest of his music is bang on and I would happily have a listen.

Who is this twat? I mean his music may not be related around skateboarding and his lyrics don’t talk about kick flipping the great wall of china but he has still called himself SKATE. Dude, what is that about. You are giving us guys a bad name so please rename yourself to something like Scoot or Blade please.

When a skateboarder suddenly decides to take up a career as a rapper. I mean Jeremy Rogers, you actually used to be good at skating but please put the microphone down and leave it to the various musicians like Wu-Tang who know what they are doing.

On a positive note, OPM killed it back in the day when they released ‘Heaven is a Halfpipe’. Now this is possibly the only track that is based around skateboarding that we can all sit down to and appreciate. Possibly even sing along is the spirits high. What skateboarder doesn’t dream of having a halfpipe in heaven, I certainly do as that would be amazing. Skate or die people, or die then skate a halfpipe in heaven, sorted.

Well there’s 5 tracks to add onto your next playlist, guilty pleasures for anyone? I would certainly like to know and if you guys can think of anymore songs that include skateboarding then fire them over to our Twitter page.

My War: Nuge’s Hill Bomb

Friday, April 29th, 2016

I think I’ve just witnessed the gnarliest thing in skateboarding for a while now. Something that doesn’t even include a trick as well and that is thanks to the My War: Nuge’s Hill Bomb. I mean we can all appreciate a good hill bomb but this is just taking things to the next level. I was literally jumping out of my seat when watching this video. There are a few decent hill bombs around Manchester but nothing that compares to this bad boy. I mean Neckface searched the steepest hills in america and this was in the top 5, god dammm. I’m glad he wore his leather jacket too because if he did come off his board, which could have easily happened, it would have torn all the skin of his body, right to the bone. I’m stoked for Nuge that he succeeded because I would much rather watch this incredible make than a Thrasher Magazine, ‘Hall Of Meat’ video. I am also not encouraging everyone to go and find the gnarliest hills around their area, I do not want to influence anyone to attempt something like this as there’s a big possibility that you may fall and that would not be enjoyable. For now appreciate this video and maybe find some mellow hills to go cruise down and have fun. Skateboarding rules and this has excited me for my skate later.

AVE Rapiweld Pro Wear Test

Wednesday, April 27th, 2016

On Monday April 25th, The House of Vans London, hosted the official wear test for the AVE Rapiweld Pro and we were kindly invited to come along. Black Sheep representatives Tez (accompanied by young son and future ripper Reuben!) headed down with the shops newest rider Jordan Sharkey .Also in attendance were more shop owners and riders from other key stores from across Europe, who had also been invited to test the latest seamless AVE shoe for themselves.

The test would be taking place at the House Of Vans and also at two iconic London spots, Brixton’s Stockwell skatepark and of course Southbank. Joining the crew were some of the UK and European Vans team who got stuck in at all three locations. Our own Rob Smith smashed it throughout the day as did our new man Sharkey (more from him in the near future). England being…well England, the heavens eventually opened and cut the Stockwell session short but not before Rob smashed out a banging Miller flip.

Rob Smith – Miller Flip – Photo CJ

Everyone headed to Southbank, the session was resumed and Sharkey took care of business with some sick tricks down the stairs, check out the edit below to see what I mean. Next it was time to head to the House Of Vans where people were treated to some beers and a fine spread of grub put on by Vans who were not shy at all with the hospitality. Big thank you to all the people at House Of Vans and Vans Europe for another enjoyable experience, shout outs to Sidewalk and CJ for photo duties.

VIP style!

Chris Cope’s “Route 44” Part

Saturday, April 23rd, 2016

As far as skateboarding goes, it doesn’t get much better than this. I mean even my mum would enjoy this new ‘Route 44’ part from Chris Cope. There are tricks featured in this section that are mind blowing. Things that I’ve always wanted to witness too. For example someone doing a loop in a full pipe with no roll in, just straight pumping. Now that’s something we can all respect. Nice one Thrasher Magazine for sharing this one with us this morning. Not only is the unexpected sun shining in Manchester but I’m now also hyped to go shred after work. Life is good!

Chris Cope, the gnarly transition ripper obviously skates Independent’s, grab yours here..

Vans Propeller – Raw Files

Saturday, April 23rd, 2016

Vans, killing the shoe game since 1966 and never failing to keep the feet of many extremely satisfied. Over the years we have seen some amazing things come from these guys including the 50th anniversary shoes that were released earlier this year then the ‘Propeller’ DVD that came out last year. That’s just a small amount of the happening’s too since I’ve not even mentioned the opening of the ‘House Of Vans’ in London. All are obviously exciting movements for the Off The Wall fans out there. In connection with the Propeller DVD Vans recently added all the RAW files from their to the worldwide web and each individual one is a more than a decent watch. Here’s a couple below for you to get started…

To watch the rest simply hit the link displayed below to be directed over to the Thrasher Magazine Youtube channel.

We have also had a fresh drop of the latest PRO skate shoes that can found only here at our store in the Manchester, if you are not local then they are all available online on our website. The PRO’s are simply a stronger, longer lasting shoe and to be honest are generally a lot more comfy than your standard ones. Also a lot better to skate in, if you want to have a look at our collection then here’s the link to do so as I’m sure a fair few will be wanting some after watch the Vans Propeller RAW files..

Quentin’s hometown weekend contest at PLO skate-park.

Friday, April 22nd, 2016

My name is Quentin and from 1995 there has been a contest every year in the city I grew up in at PLO skate-park. That is thanks to the organizers Ploskateclub. This annual contest is an opportunity to meet new people and skate in a unique atmosphere. I mean as we all know, competitions and skate events are more than adventurous. People from all over the country come every year to skate and party during these two special days when the contest is held. The ‘PLO Skate Club’ spirit is to share and promote Skateboarding around Brittany giving the kids a decent place to go skateboarding but also a place for any skaters to evolve. The skate-park opened in 1993 and since then we have seen some amazing skate sessions, parties, video premieres, contests and International trips. Have a little look below to gather an understanding of what goes down at the PLO skate park and even more so when the yearly competition is on.

The contest is divided into 4 parts. First of all you’ve got the death race which often sees a few collisions, it’s lethal. Then it is the standard skate-park competition which is held as a jam format for the kids and then nervy one minute runs for the older dudes. I have entered more than a few times from the age of 8 although sadly have never won aha. Well in fact I did win once but it was as a team so maybe that doesn’t count. That is followed by a bowl comp that sees the transition guys smashing it and finally we finish with the best trick. The best trick is held on the second day which is normally the Sunday due to all the antics on the previous day. You need a little rest don’t you. Well in fact that isn’t the case as the big party is on the Saturday night and pretty much everyone parties too hard then fail miserably on the Sunday. View some photos below and watch an edit to understand what I am talking about. Maybe in the future we will see a few people from the UK at the contest or even just to skate the park.

To finish we have an edit for you guys to watch. I mean the photos are amazing above although I feel that watching the edit is the best way to understand the beauty of the weekend contest. It’s made by passionate skaters and I feel it’ll express the atmosphere with the kids, parents, traditional crepes, beers and rad skating to its best. I love this weekend and it has been a huge part of my life since a young age, enjoy!

Fresh drop of Polar Skate Co

Friday, April 22nd, 2016

polar skate co

Polar Skate Co smashed it this week with the release of their new video ‘I like it here inside my mind, don’t wake me this time’ that was composed by one of skateboarding’s greatest, Pontus Alv. Pontus has entertained us yet again with another mind boggling video. Not as many unusual clips featured this time round compared to ‘Strongest of the Strange’ which was also a huge hit a while ago but the skating as always, is some next level shit. The video features people such as Aaron Herrington, Kevin Rodridgues, Hjalte Halberg, Pontus Alv and Am’s Oskar Rozenberg Hallberg, Michał Juraś, David Stenstrom, Dane Brady, Paul Grund and Jacob Ovgren. We have the DVD on sale over on our website but it has literally flown of the shelves leaving us with one copy left. Although we will be getting a restock though so don’t panic just yet.

As the DVD arrived it will also be very pleasing to the ears of all skaters that we have received a fresh load of their clothing, accessories and boards as well. Let me tell you something too, it’s all mighty fine. You’ve got a great selection to choose from boards wise, ranging in different sizes to suit all. With the clothing you’ve got some of your popular standard logo t-shirts and hoodies. There is plenty more bits to have a look through, for now here’s a snippet of the whole collection. Great work Polar Skate Co.

John Shanahan recently shocked the eyes of many skaters with his part that was featured last in the LurkNYC’s Stresscase video, as seen above. Since the part was nothing but incredible there was no surprise that one of skateboarding’s most gangster companies DGK, bumped him up from a flow rider to the full DGK team. John Shanahan kills it and his style reminds me of how skateboarding was 10 years back. Pretty similar stuff to Josh Kalis, well especially with the clothing choices and even trick selection. Thoroughly enjoy watching this guy skate and now there’s yet another mint section below celebrating his big moves in the DGK team, enjoy. I hope to see more parts from this dude in the near future.
