gilbert-crockett-interview-black-sheep-skate-store-blog   What was it like having Jamie Thomas in charge back when you rode for Mystery and Fallen?   It was cool, I think he pushed me a lot and I definitely appreciate everything he did for me, I don’t think I would be sitting right here if it wasn’t for him.   Is his reputation as ruthless as it’s rumoured to be?   (Laughing), yeah probably. At the same time he gets people to do shit. He’s really good at motivating you or getting you to do a trick you don’t think you can do and things of that nature.   I heard he’s no stranger to using money to motivate people to land tricks. How much do you reckon that you won from that?   I grew my hair out for a year and he gave me a hundred dollars from a bet. I used to get paid by the trick that was video worthy, I used to work in the warehouse. I used to work half days which gave me $24 and some change or something like that. So instead of doing that, he was like “Every trick you get, I’ll pay you what you’re making in the warehouse,” so I stopped working in the warehouse and started filming.   What’s the strangest thing you have witnessed Chris Nieratko do?   Oh shit. Well I met him when he was sober so I don’t have any of the crazy stories that old Nieratko was doing. I might have to skip that one.   What was your first tattoo and how long did it take you get completely covered?   ‘CELLOUT’ – which was a skate video me and friends made on cell phones. I got my arms mostly covered in like a year.   Who is ‘Special Gilby’?   (Laughing), I can’t even remember how that started but it’s basically a really ghetto version of myself. I think it might have started on a Vans tour when I was tired of doing demos. I did an interview like that for Skate Warehouse I think it was. Just being on the road for a while is pretty much what spawned it.   What’s the most intense thing you have witnessed AVE do whether on a skateboard or not?   Let’s see… One thing that sticks out is a session where he was trying to backside grind this handrail where you have to ollie over a curb at the top. It was a tall handrail anyways so he was battling it. I think we were in Australia and the team was hanging out near the spot and he got so pissed that he was throwing his board. Everyone just dispersed and was freaked out by being around him and scared of how angry he was. We just left the spot, (laughs). I remember being blown away by that.   Oh actually, the first trip I went on with him… This was the first time being around him. We were at a spot and Dylan [Rieder] was skating a rail. We were in Miami and AVE came back with a Cuban sandwich. It was all greasy and he started eating it really fast and he just freaked out after a few bites and focused the sandwich on the sidewalk after a few bites and was so disgusted by it. I was blown away, (laughs). That was my first impression…   gilbert-crockett-kickflip-black-sheep-skate-store-blog-interview-photo-courtesy-of-vans   How much say do you, Jake Johnson and Tyler Bledsoe all have in who gets on Quasi?   It’s a pretty tight ship, I think if one of us said ‘no’ and the other two said ‘yes’ I don’t think someone would get on but I think it’s probably different every time. I don’t really know what would happen like that.   There has been rumors of a video, can you give anything away about that at all?   Yeah, they’ve been filming it for a while, Dick and Josh have been and now Justin. Other dudes have been doing other shit, Tyler just put that part out [All Clear OK] and Jake has been doing GX1000 stuff, and I’ve been working on Gospel so hopefully we’ll start working on it soon.   Is that going to be a full length?   Hopefully, but not like years and years of working on it.   If you had to fight any teammate, past or present, who it be?   (Laughing), oh shit. Who would that be? God damn. I’ll say Daniel Lutheran just because he’s my boy.   Any Vans rider on Quasi who would it be?   Dan Lu, I love him.   Best pro skateboarder that dropped off or went AWOL?   Anthony Pappalardo.   Do you care about politics?   I do not care. I mean I care but I try as hard as I can to stay ignorant to it because I know it’s not going to bring me anything but down. So, I don’t really want to be involved.   Finish this sentence – “You should buy my shoe…”   So you can skate like me!
