DC Shoes Kalis OG

DC Shoes Kalis OG

You know your a 90’s skater when you still get the chills at the mention of Josh Kalis. The technique, style and street grace from the OG Love Park ruler has been rocking the DC Shoes brand since day dot pretty much.

If your asking why the blog piece on Kalis and Dc Shoes… basically we’ve got a very special re-release due in store very soon. As yet even DC Shoes UK can’t tell us the release date so for now these sure to be highly sort after skate shoes will sit under a watchful protection in our skate store stock room. Keep a look out via our social media platforms for any shoe release updates.

So not that we need an excuse but there’s nothing like avoiding the real work piling up and reminiscing on one of our all time faves here at the Black Sheep Store, Sir Style Guru Josh Kalis!

This excuse of work basically involves “researching” all our fondest parts from Kalis and delving into the photo archive with long time photographer friend Blabac. These two are like peas in a pod when it comes to sponsored skateboarder and professional photographers. There joint work over the years has created timeless master pieces that no doubt adorn walls World Wide.

A little brief history with Kalis follows and yet more reasons he’s a skaters “skater” favourite. Born and raised in Michigan and known for his integration into many a skate scene World Wide. From stints (and probably the most fondly remembered) in Philadelphia,  Chicago, Dallas and San Francisco plus gracing our European skate world with an much welcomed over stay residency in Barcelona. All this travel whilst staying true with his first love of his family and now settled down in the sunshine capital of Carlsbad, California, US. Josh continues to kill it on his skateboard, being one of the “elders|” of the 90’s street skating movement he show’s no sign of letting up. Good to see DC Skateboarding recognise this lifetime achievement and still honour Kalis with his own range of dope footwear including the all new DC Shoes Kalis S

Watch the video below for said recent release with Kalis x Blabac “Yours For The Taking”

So with such heritage with Dc Shoes and Josh Kalis it comes as no surprise to see a reprisal of the Kalis OG silhouette. The hype around this shoe from the original release back in 2000 was crazy, every other skater you’d see was rocking the OG Kalis with as many extra padded tongues as humanly possible. The baggy vibe of the early 2000’s could certainly be honoured to Kalis himself along with the tech street movement of the time.

So with all this said we’re stoked to announce to be one of the chosen few stockist in the UK to be offering up the DC Shoes Kalis OG. As mentioned above these are currently under lock and key in store but we’ve managed to sneak a few pictures and a coming soon listing for you to drool over.

vans-anti-hero-shoes-release

Like we need any excuse to talk about Vans x Anti Hero! To say we’re stoked on this collaboration release is an understatement. Get the low down on this full release then scan your cursor downwards and hit play. Like we say, any excuse for some Anti Hero appreciation with a shed load of classic footage.

This collaboration pack includes the Vans TNT Advanced Prototype, Vans Slip On Pro, Old Skool Pro and the ever illusive Vans Sk8 Mid Pro’s. The full collaboration capsule is due in any-day now. Keep an eye on our Black Sheep Store Instagram for up to minute updates.

With signature models from the legendary collaboration riders Tony Trujillo, Chris Pfhanner, John Cardiel and Jeff Grosso. Plus insole artwork by the absolute ruler Todd Francis

Take note of the Vans Pro range and the differences with make up and insoles. The TNT Advanced Prototype and Grosso Sk8-Mid Pro’s both utilising Vans UltraCush Lite 3D footbed insoles (*editors note- these are ridicuously comfy with real arch support in a vulcanised shoe.) The John Cardiel Old Skool Pro and Chris Pfhanner Slip On Pro are both equipped with Duracap (dual layer reinforcement under toe piece suede) reinforced rubber underlays for durability plus the ever popular UltraCush HD sockliners for cushioning and impact protection.

All the Vans x Anti Hero Footwear range comes complete with the Todd Francis artwork insoles along with woven embroidered Anti Hero tab label. Seriously can’t choose between the styles of this collaboration pack but the welcome return of the Vans Sk8 Mid from Jeff Grosso is sure to be a straight up classic go to skate shoe.

vans-antihero-skate-shoes

Also you’ll be able to purchase the banging apparel pack to coincide with this Vans x Anti Hero release.

The Vans x Antihero apparel collection comes correct as you’d expect. Clean simple graphics on short and long sleeve tees, a fleece pullover hooded sweatshirt and a trucker hat. Make sure you check the detailing on the staple work-wear inspired yarn dye shadow plaid flannel shirt. Regular straight fit with Todd Francis artwork pigeon embroidery to lower hem plus custom label package details.

vans-anti-hero-skateboards

Now remind yourselves why Anti Hero Skateboards is one of the most well respected brands out there. Good reason why skate footwear rulers Vans continue to seek out these collaborations with only the best. “All Hail” Vans x Anti Hero.

The classic Antihero “Fucktards” video. Originally release back in 1997.

The one when Cardiel goes nuts! Or is that even nuttier than before. John Cardiel worship is highly encouraged!

This was the one you just couldn’t find on video. Maybe your mate had a copy of a copy held together with celloptape and the prongs snapped out so you couldn’t record over it. Timeless skateboarding Antihero “Two Songs” from the year 2002.

Tony Trujillo aka TNT = Vans x Anti Hero lifer!

Big poppa Chris Pfanner for the Vans “Propeller” video.

Okay so it’s not classic Grosso footage from the late 80’s but his ‘Love letters to Skateboarding’ episodes are just to entertaining to not mention.

Adidas Skateboarding Tyshawn Jones

Thursday, March 7th, 2019

adidas-skateboarding-tyshaen-jones-thrasher-soty

Adidas Skateboarding Tyshawn Jones

Yes indeed, the three stripe hype is the real deal for this guy Tyshawn Jones. Adidas Skateboarding brought this kid through from the ground up (along with the legendary filmer William Strobeck.) So from humble beginnings Tyshawn is the new breed and here at Black Sheep we’re 110% backing the pure style of this young man’s skateboarding.

So, Tyshawn background is the true underdog coming goods. Hailing from the rough East Coast and daily slaying New York spots this guy is as raw power as it come. I’ve always felt he’s that kid to come through with a NBA style, pure leg pop athleticism but with complete smoothness and grace. Yes far reach I know but you don’t get many (if at all) straight nollie flipping over trash cans! That’s like the pop Jordan needed to slam dunk from the line right there.

2018 seemed to be Tyshawn’s year with no signs of letting up for 2019. Rumours adrift that Adidas Skateboarding might be giving him his own shoe… only time will tell but for now his FA Entertainment boards must be flying along with signature trucks and wheels for Thunder and Spitfire for the Deluxe camp.

Early on last year you could follow Tyshawn Jones Instagram and get a feel for his dedication. Snippets on his story showed him out at all hours with Supreme master creative William Strobeck. Even after this incl-in nobody expected the two song straight up raw power of his ‘Blessed’ part. Up till this point he seemed the under dog for Thrasher Magazine’s highly coveted Skater Of The Year title but once Supreme dropped there latest video you just couldn’t deny Tyshawn his rightful crown.

thrasher-magazine-tyshawn-jones-cover-2018

By all accounts he’s not slowing up neither with yet nothing to prove he want’s to go at it again for 2019. Fingers crossed we get a blessed Jason Dill inspired FA Entertainment full part! That would be very nice to run alongside his endless social media output. Remember kids style matters and by all accounts he’s a good guy with his head firmly screwed on his shoulders. In the down time from smashing out ridiculous footage Tsyhawn has been busy at the design hub for adidas Skateboarding, working closely with the legendary Scott Johnston (respected older Pro for the younger folk reading) they’ve been putting ideas to paper for a small signature apparel collection due later this year.

So by now your thinking to yourself what’s the reasoning for this long winded blog post about Tyshawn and hints at what he’s up to for adidas skateboarding… Well you can’t beat a ramble social media posting as an excuse to post a whole host of one of favorites videos and photos. Also look for the link for interviews and more all to help give you more of an in-depth look into Tyshawn’s World.

Kicking it all off with joint section with adidas and Supreme team mate Sir Mark Gonzales (insert worship emoji.)

And not forgetting that opening backside flip from his adidas skateboarding ‘Away Days’ part!

Forgot to mention Tyshawn and his tight crew have the highly sort after Hardies Hardware brand. Oh and of course they all absolutely kill it! Below for evidence.

In the midst of writing this blog piece Thrasher Magazine seen fit to release the April 2019 issue. Guess who’s gracing the coveted cover spot again! Yeah Tyshawn, ‘SOTY’ status ringing true! Pick up your copy here Thrasher Magazine Tyshawn Jones Cover April 2019

tyshawn-thrasher-skater-of-the-year

The yearly chosen Skater Of The Year also get’s to take his/her (when will we see a woman Skater Of The Year!) nearest and dearest on a trip. This is basically the celebration week long party and skate mission with said chosen crew. Let it be known Tyshawn and his guys did not just slack on there holidays for this one. Some seriously powerful vacation shredding of the highest order.

If you’ve made it this far into our Tyshawn Jones appreciation blog piece then you may be hungry for more. You won’t go far wrong following this link to Jenkem Mag “Hustle To The Top” interview and get the low down on adidas skateboarding, Supreme and Fucking Awesome direct from the proverbial horses mouth. Good work Tyshawn, keep on keeping on and here at Black Sheep we’ll admirably be following your next moves. All killer no filler Tyshawn Jones!

NocturnUp Hong Kong – Nick Richards

Tuesday, March 27th, 2018

NocturnUp Hong Kong – Nick Richards

So Nick can you give us a bit of your skate background, where did you grow up, how did you discover the wonders of four wheels?

I’m from between Newport and Cardiff in Wales, I got into skating through a German sponsored skater (Ralph Poschke) who moved to our school when I was about 12/13.

Anyone you grew up skating with still rolling now? Anyone who’s come through we’d know about or should know about?

Lots of the people I grew up with still skate, as for fresh talent in South Wales, it seems like every time I go home there’s a new ripper. That place breeds good skateboarders!

When did you first get into filming? Was it through skating or outside interest?

A few months into skating, after I caught the bug, I was at the newly opened CSP (Cardiff skatepark) having a roll about. A BMXer came flying at me so I tried to get out of his way by jumping up onto the block I was next to. This was before I could even properly ollie, but somehow the board came with my and I ended up on top of the block. I completely lost my balance and came backwards off it onto my straight arm, resulting in a break.

Still wanting to hang out with my mates, despite the broken arm I begged my parents to pick me up digicam (with no audio) from Argos. After that I found myself studying skate videos from a filming perspective, probably moreso than skating. After that I slowly progressed to a VX1000 and stuck with that for a few years until the repair costs became too much of an issue and I realised I wanted a career outside just filming skateboarders. That’s when I picked up a 5D mk2 and started to take it all a bit more seriously.

Any backlog of edits/videos the reader could go hunt down?

If you look at www.vimeo.com/nickrichards there are lot of skate videos that go back to 2008. Any further than that are still on VHS.

What’s your personal favourite video/edits throughout your years? What’s the go to video for the hype skate?

Siam Siam But Different in Thailand or The Far East Coast in Vietnam were incredible experiences. For hype though I’d have to say the new NocturnUP.

Who’s initial plan was it for the Hong Kong trip NocturnUp?

We’d done one the year before in Bangkok which was initially Daryl’s idea after he got back from his travels. The way that Asian cities caught his eye at night inspired the concept. Also many of them are too hot to skate during the day and overpopulated so it was a win win. Hong Kong came about because I was working with Isaac (Wilkinson) and he’d previously been night skating there. The idea was that it would be the two of us filming Hong Kong to share the workload but in the end Isaac couldn’t make it.

How did you know which riders would be into the mission?

The rider selection was down to who we knew and wanted to go. There were a few other names we wanted to come but finances and prior obligations got in the way. In the end we had Charlie Munro, Jordan Sharkey, Seb Batty and also Jasper Dohrs (a Seattle transplant living in Bangkok) to join us too. It was just Daryl and Dylan Hughes the year before, with the Bangkok dudes and they smashed it so we were confident HK would work out too!

nocturnup-hong-kong-skateboarding

How long did you have over there?

We had 12 days there in total, which resulted in 10 full nights of filming and very little chilling.

Most memorable moment from the trip?

There was a lot of funny shit that happened throughout, but probably the most memorable thing was Daryl’s battle on the last night. He took a slam, that I will not be able to unsee, then five minutes later came out victorious.

Were spots easy enough to find? Obviously Black Sheep family member Seb was on the trip as a guide, how did he come through for you?

If we didn’t have Seb, Owen Yu and Piet Guilfoyle, we probably wouldn’t have skated a lot of the hidden gems. Hong Kong city itself is actually quite small though and many nights we’d skate from one side of the city to the other and find things along the way. The boys always had our backs and were the ones to wake us up from our daylight slumber to seize the night haha. Luckily we didn’t have any gnarly situations – as you occasionally do in foreign countries on skate trips – so we all just had a bloody great time!

seb-batty-hong-kong-skateboarding

Who was most productive on the trip? Stirring the pot with this one but who would also be the nightmare dude who stayed in bed longer than everyone else or generally was a nause, haha?

It’s pretty safe to say Charlie Munro came away with the most footy, but none of these boys farted around getting tricks. I have to say it was the most productive trip I’ve personally ever been on, I’m very proud of all my boys! As for late risers I think we all had our moments, same goes for being nauses haha.

Any specific thanks to brands or anyone who helped out making NocturnUp a reality?

Vans helped with Daryl and Sharkey; Primitive with Charlie; New Balance with Jasper; and Seb and I paid for ourselves. Most of the boys only had flights covered though, so a lot of the stuff we did was out of our own pockets.

jordan-sharkey-nocturnup-hong-kong

Any future skate/filming trips planned?

I should have some more soon with Charlie for New Balance, and Daryl is really keen to get NocturnUP happening more than once a year. The next call for that is Taipei which I’ve heard is incredible. I’m also off to South Africa with the legends on the Route One team – that’ll be a dream trip. Other than that we’ll have to see what the summer brings.

Rough Cut: Louie Lopez’s “West End” Part

louie-lopez-poll-jam-acosta

Louie Lopez seriously ain’t no joke! As the tiny framed Flip Skateboard’s prodigy to full blown mind blowing Pro. Take the time to witness his silky smooth abilities on a skateboard and take a moment after each ridiculously trick and let them sink in.

Massive fans of his work here at The Black Sheep, the guy just ‘plays’ at skating and makes it look all to simple and fun. Mr Mellow laid back reflects consistently in his huge footage output.

Who else has put out the coverage of Louie!? He’s constantly on one and as the skateboard industry rumor mill is to be believed then his full forthcoming part for Converse Cons is going to be another mind blower!

Again it’s thanks to Thrasher Magazine for putting this remix ‘Rough Cut’ edit out. With over 20 minutes of futuristic skateboarding by Flip Skateboard’s finest. Bear witness and keep them peeled as they say for announcements of his up and coming Cons part. More info from us soon….
