Shin Sanbongi for adidas Skateboarding ‘Matchbreak Super’ skate shoe

Saturday, February 8th, 2020

For reasons that have never quite been that clear, until fairly recently the Japanese skate scene has existed in an almost separate dimension to that of the American and European ones. However, with the recent Shin Sanbongi for adidas Skateboarding global ‘Matchbreak Super’ release, the tide finally appears to be turning, with this Japanese ripper seeing his name emblazoned on a globally-available adidas skate shoe. I’d like to say that this is the first ever global shoe release featuring a Japanese skater but, as I’m unable to verify that claim, let’s just assume that it’s true.
The banging kicks related to this Shin Sanbongi for adidas Skateboarding news, (which you can see/buy below) seems a decent enough reason to regale you with a little bit of Japanese skate culture simply because, if you’re not already aware of how amazing Shin Sanbongi is, you’re missing out.

Shin Sanbongi for adidas Skateboarding

Shin Sanbongi joining Pontus Alv’s Polar Skate Co crew was a big deal for the Japanese skate scene, with this Chigasaki-City native joining the likes of April Skateboards’ Yuto Horigome representing a new generation of Japanese rippers finally breaking into the global skate industry.

Shin Sanbongi’s heritage is one that mixes surfing and skateboarding, with his father a well-known surfer in the Kanagawa scene, and once you know that – his unique flowing style starts to make a lot more sense.
You can find out more about Mr. Sanbongi in this excellent Solo Mag interview here.
Once you’ve done that, check out his amazing section in Polar Skate Co‘s masterpiece ‘We blew it at some point’ linked below.

Anyone with a passing interest in global skate culture will already be aware that Japanese skateboarding is huge and, despite lacking a global industry spotlight until the last 5 or so years, has left an indelible mark on global skate culture via the Internet. Brands such as Magenta skateboards have openly acknowledged the inspiration provided by the land of the rising sun and videos such as the Lenz series by Shinpei Ueno, along with European based film-makers such as Yoan Taillandier owing a great aesthetic debt to the releases of Tightbooth Productions over in Japan. (If you’re interested – have a look at the Lenz clip linked earlier in this text, then peep Yoan Taillandier’s epic ‘Minuit’ video – you’ll see the connection almost instantly. That isn’t to say that the Japanese invented the extreme fisheye/weird street spots aesthetic, but they most definitely refined it into its own genre.

That should work as a decent intro to a whole other world of incredible skating, insane futuristic architecture and a bunch of skaters whose names you might not have encountered before. Now, as a final connected note, check out the Quartersnacks Insta remix of Shin footy below too, then head over to our site and drop some coin on his new adidas Skateboarding kicks and/or some Polar Skate Co gear.

Mark Gonzales adidas Aloha Super Wallenberg skate shoe exclusive

Mark Gonzales adidas Aloha Super Wallenberg skate shoe exclusive to Black Sheep.

Inspired by Mark Gonzales’ 1991 christening of a spot that has gone on to be legendary in skate culture, we are proud to announce that The Black Sheep are one of only two UK retailers stocking the adidas Aloha Super Wallenberg skate shoe. Dropping tomorrow, (November 2nd), this exclusive number will fly off the shelves so if you’re down, don’t hang about – go grab your adidas Aloha Super Wallenberg skate shoes right now.

Based on the super popular adidas silhouette first released as the Mark Gonzales Aloha Super last year, this adidas Aloha Super Wallenberg skate shoe updates that initial release with several nods to the context of Gonz’s paradigm-shifting ollie grab down Wallenberg’s big four back in 1991. The pink insoles and Scmoofoil logo on the tongue reference both the great man’s distinctive art work and the sun-drenched context to Gonz’s first big four conquest as seen in probably the greatest skate video every made – the masterful 1991 Blind ‘Video Days’. Similarly, the iconic black Three Stripe graphic on the lateral midfoot nods to the less than forgiving black asphalt that composes the floor at Wallenberg itself.
The overall shape of the Mark Gonzales adidas Aloha Super Wallenberg skate shoe also refers back to the adiStar fencing shoe, as memorably rocked by the man himself during his now infamous 1998 performance art piece in Mönchengladbach, Germany (see below).

We’re so hyped to be one of only two UK retailers stocking this homage to skateboarding’s greatest that we figured it was a good enough excuse to remind you all of a few bits of Wallenberg history as well.
If you peep the video embedded at the top of this page, you’ll see a fairly comprehensive overview of some of the most note worthy bangers to have gone down since Gonz first ollie grabbed the big four nearly 30 years ago. Everyone will have their own favourites no doubt but, as with most things in skate history, it all started with Mark Gonzales.

For those of you who might not have seen Gonz’s ‘Video Days’ section – dive in now and fill your eyeballs with 30 year old time traveling. This video part changed skateboarding forever.
(The Wallenberg ollie grab is at 2:32).

We’d be slipping if we didn’t also include Thrasher Magazine‘s Back to the Berg (2009) event video here too.
This one followed up their original 2004 Wallenberg event and served as a reminder to people of just how fucking crazy Wallenberg’s big four is. With Phelps in charge, this school-sanctioned carcass tossing frenzy cemented itself in skate history, with NBDs dropping like hammers from a greasy tool box.

Since then, the big four at Raoul Wallenberg Traditional High School in SF still hold their position as one of skateboard culture’s most recognisable spots and is still regularly hit up nearly 30 years since Gonz set the bar.

If the geeks among you crave more stats on this asphalt behemoth, Jenkem Mag put together a funny interview with the big four here, along with measuring Wallenberg so you don’t have to.

One final thing absolutely worth mentioning here is that the Raoul Wallenberg high school in SF, the one you know about because of skateboarding culture, is actually named after a real person. Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish architect and businessman who is credited globally for personally saving tens of thousands of Jewish people from death during WWII. His story is incredible – read more here: Raoul Wallenberg

Adidas Skateboarding Tyshawn Jones

Adidas Skateboarding Tyshawn Jones

Yes indeed, the three stripe hype is the real deal for this guy Tyshawn Jones. Adidas Skateboarding brought this kid through from the ground up (along with the legendary filmer William Strobeck.) So from humble beginnings Tyshawn is the new breed and here at Black Sheep we’re 110% backing the pure style of this young man’s skateboarding.

So, Tyshawn background is the true underdog coming goods. Hailing from the rough East Coast and daily slaying New York spots this guy is as raw power as it come. I’ve always felt he’s that kid to come through with a NBA style, pure leg pop athleticism but with complete smoothness and grace. Yes far reach I know but you don’t get many (if at all) straight nollie flipping over trash cans! That’s like the pop Jordan needed to slam dunk from the line right there.

2018 seemed to be Tyshawn’s year with no signs of letting up for 2019. Rumours adrift that Adidas Skateboarding might be giving him his own shoe… only time will tell but for now his FA Entertainment boards must be flying along with signature trucks and wheels for Thunder and Spitfire for the Deluxe camp.

Early on last year you could follow Tyshawn Jones Instagram and get a feel for his dedication. Snippets on his story showed him out at all hours with Supreme master creative William Strobeck. Even after this incl-in nobody expected the two song straight up raw power of his ‘Blessed’ part. Up till this point he seemed the under dog for Thrasher Magazine’s highly coveted Skater Of The Year title but once Supreme dropped there latest video you just couldn’t deny Tyshawn his rightful crown.

thrasher-magazine-tyshawn-jones-cover-2018

By all accounts he’s not slowing up neither with yet nothing to prove he want’s to go at it again for 2019. Fingers crossed we get a blessed Jason Dill inspired FA Entertainment full part! That would be very nice to run alongside his endless social media output. Remember kids style matters and by all accounts he’s a good guy with his head firmly screwed on his shoulders. In the down time from smashing out ridiculous footage Tsyhawn has been busy at the design hub for adidas Skateboarding, working closely with the legendary Scott Johnston (respected older Pro for the younger folk reading) they’ve been putting ideas to paper for a small signature apparel collection due later this year.

So by now your thinking to yourself what’s the reasoning for this long winded blog post about Tyshawn and hints at what he’s up to for adidas skateboarding… Well you can’t beat a ramble social media posting as an excuse to post a whole host of one of favorites videos and photos. Also look for the link for interviews and more all to help give you more of an in-depth look into Tyshawn’s World.

Kicking it all off with joint section with adidas and Supreme team mate Sir Mark Gonzales (insert worship emoji.)

And not forgetting that opening backside flip from his adidas skateboarding ‘Away Days’ part!

Forgot to mention Tyshawn and his tight crew have the highly sort after Hardies Hardware brand. Oh and of course they all absolutely kill it! Below for evidence.

In the midst of writing this blog piece Thrasher Magazine seen fit to release the April 2019 issue. Guess who’s gracing the coveted cover spot again! Yeah Tyshawn, ‘SOTY’ status ringing true! Pick up your copy here Thrasher Magazine Tyshawn Jones Cover April 2019

The yearly chosen Skater Of The Year also get’s to take his/her (when will we see a woman Skater Of The Year!) nearest and dearest on a trip. This is basically the celebration week long party and skate mission with said chosen crew. Let it be known Tyshawn and his guys did not just slack on there holidays for this one. Some seriously powerful vacation shredding of the highest order.

If you’ve made it this far into our Tyshawn Jones appreciation blog piece then you may be hungry for more. You won’t go far wrong following this link to Jenkem Mag “Hustle To The Top” interview and get the low down on adidas skateboarding, Supreme and Fucking Awesome direct from the proverbial horses mouth. Good work Tyshawn, keep on keeping on and here at Black Sheep we’ll admirably be following your next moves. All killer no filler Tyshawn Jones!

Adidas Skateboarding has been spicing up production lately. They recently dropped the new 3ST series on us. Now, Adidas is set to release a new type of skate shoe, the 3MC.

Adidas set an objective to make a high performing skate shoe that could also be worn for everyday use. Aesthetically, the 3MC takes inspiration from the iconic Gazelle silhouette, which Adidas considers to be one of the most influential styles in their archives. The 3MC has it’s classic Adidas exterior, while at the same time being a durable skate shoe. This is thanks to it’s new Geoflex outsole and reinforced triple-needle stitch. The Adidas team have skated and approved the 3MC’s.

In other words, the 3MC combines iconic design elements from Adidas heritage with modern performance in mind. By marrying these two elements Adidas gives life to the ultimate all purpose shoe.
