Anthony Van Engelen – AVE appreciation for the new Vans AVE Pro shoe

Monday, August 26th, 2019

With the release of Anthony Van Engelen‘s latest Vans AVE Pro Skate Shoe it seems a little redundant to not use that as a justified jumping off point for a little appreciation of the man himself.
Fortuitously, but not unsurprisingly, Free Skate Mag, (in association with video archivist and remixer Jan Maarten Sneep AKA @memoryscreen on Instagram) have taken a little of the legwork out of this endeavour via today’s release of an AVE Greatest Hits video which you can see above. Watch that first, then perhaps show your appreciation for the man with the undisputed greatest switch 360 flip in the history of skateboarding by bagging up a pair of his latest Vans Pro Skate kicks here.
Anthony Van Engelen - AVE appreciation

With the above said, it’s probably a good point to insert some of the classic AVE parts that the above Memory Screen ‘Best Of’ clip has cannibalized, if for no other reason than to be entirely clear about just how fucking awesome (pun intended) this Californian maniac is.
As we’re on a Vans tip, there seems to be no better place to start than the Raw Files edit of his recent(ish) Vans Propeller section, containing the raw visuals of his epic section and including everything from alley oop back smiths in Californian ditches to gap out to boardslides on kinked rails in Belper, Derbyshire.
If you haven’t already watched this one you’re slipping, hard.

Following up from the Propeller Raw Files, we’ve got AVE’s Alien Workshop‘s swansong section (before he left with fellow AWS alumni Jason Dill to form FA and Hockey Skateboards) which is absolutely banging and contains yet more evidence as regards his crown as the king of the switch tres, along with a brace of switch and fakie handrail majesty, a Danny Way cameo and further exploration around the ‘Over the Top‘ handrail genre first invented by Sean Sheffey (last trick in his Mouse part here for the nerds). If you don’t like this, you’re dead to us. 3.22 in for the switch tres of dreams!

Next up is another timeless classic from the vaults of the pre-Internet Internet with the theme tune that anyone over the age of 30 has etched into their memory – namely the 411 Video Magazine Alien Workshop Industry Section. For those of you too young to appreciate the impact that 411VM had on the global skate scene, or of the implication of the phrase ‘Industry Section‘ as far as skateboarding culture is concerned – hit the hyper links in this here sentence for a brief overview. Then go download the the track ‘The Boxcar‘ by Sol for the ultimate skate earworm. Mr Dibbs and peak Alien – fuck yes!
(By the way – if you’re wondering what the intro song for this 411 banger is – worry not – it’s called ‘Little Ethnic Song‘ and it’s by Dinosaur Jr – it also features as the intro for Alien Workshop’s first video release, the epoch-forming Memory Screen – hence the Dutch dude’s Instagram handle – watch Memory Screen in full here and brainwash yourselves.

Obviously there are way too many AVE parts to post for the space we have here, so let’s end it on a under-appreciated classic, again from his time on the Sovereign Sect, alongside team mates Jason Dill, Dylan Rieder, Jake Johnson, Omar Salazar, Kevin Terpening, Grant Taylor, Mikey Taylor and Gilbert Crockett. It’s hard to top this one – the ender section from the 2012 Transworld Skateboarding’s ‘Cinematographer’ video, filmed and edited by Benny Magliano who is now in charge of Hockey Skateboards output.

I’ve purposely not included AVE’s DC part here since most of the best stuff from that section is included in the Memory Screen remix at the very top but, if you’ve never seen it – go watch AVE destroy Barcelona here.
Oh yeah, it also has the best switch manual switch tres out that a human will ever perform too.

That was enjoyable – now go bask in switch front crooks glory and push three times faster at every obstacle than is necessary.

Still thirsty for more AVE? Go check this pre FA Anthony Van Engelen interview here, and this Greg Hunt piece for further back stories here.

Speedway Mag The Greg Hunt Interview: Transworld to DC, Alien Workshop’s ‘Mind Field’, remembering Dylan Rieder & ‘Ninety-Six Dreams, Two Thousand Memories with Jason Dill

Our mate and occasional shop worker/opinionated high trouser enthusiast, Farran Golding, has published a lengthy interview to his Speedway Mag website chronicling the life and work of Greg Hunt.

The interview covers Greg’s early days in San Francisco as a sponsored skateboarder for Stereo, before quitting the pro ranks as his career seemed to peak to pursue cinematography. The interview goes into how Greg approached his first solo project, The DC Video, before delving into a myriad of behind the scenes information of the creation of Alien Workshop’s Mind Field – with plenty of stories about filming with Anthony Van Engelen and Heath Kirchart thrown in for good measure.

Greg candidly discusses his friendship with Dylan Rieder, sharing many touching stories of the times they spent together with particular focus on Greg’s short film for gravis footwear, dylan., which enforced Rieder as one of modern skateboarding’s greats.

Finally, the interview touches on Greg’s upcoming book with Jason Dill, Ninety-Six Dreams, Two Thousand Memories, which depicts their friendship over the last seventeen years.

There’s also plenty of photographic gold from Greg’s personal archive, scans from Workshop catalogues and numerous renowned photographers alongside a small selection of the Mind Field photo book unearthed (good luck finding much of it anywhere else on the internet.

Nice one, Alan.

“Dylan was someone I had, who was one of those friends who really loved you for who you are. He really respected you and you were really important to him. If you ask Van Engelen, Dill or anyone who knew Dylan they would say the same thing. He made it clear, in his own way, that you were special to him. A real friend of his. That’s something a lot of people don’t have. All my friends are special to me but I don’t have the ability to project that. Being a human is complicated. Dylan had this thing about him where he really loved his friends and his friends all knew. That’s one of the saddest things about losing Dylan. A lot of people aren’t lucky to have anyone like that in their life and when I look back– having a friend like that is what made those times so cool.”

Coming out blazing from the cold winter months, Vans and Spitfire Wheels have teamed to deliver four unique colourways for their Pro Skate footwear range alongside an apparel collection blending classic the iconography of two of the oldest and well respected brands in skateboarding history. Here’s your first glimpse at the Vans X Spitfire Wheels Spring 2018 collection…

First up we’ve got the latest addition to the Vans Pro Skate line-up, The Chima Pro 2, in Pink/White. We’re big fans of the new silhouette (and Chima Ferguson himself – obviously) which manages to be streamlined and lightweight without sacrificing any durability thanks to Vans’ Duracap technology which reinforces the shoes suede and canvas upper. The Chima 2 also introduces Vans’ UltraCush Lite 3D footbed which builds on the original UltraCush Lite insole by adding dual-density foam. Throw in a moulded heel counter and Vans beloved waffle outsole and the end is result is a responsive, supportive and long lasting shoe which is topped off with Spitfire artwork including a pleasant reminder to ‘Burn Forever’ debossed into the leather heel piece and ridges resembling Spitfire’s ‘Swirl’ pattern on the trademark Vans jazz stripe.

Another pastel piece comes courtesy of the Kyle Walker Pro in Baby Blue. Again, artwork inspired by Spitfire’s classic swirl pattern adorns the side stripe alongside the shoe’s Ultracush HD insole which, combined with the Wafflecup outsole, provides the best of boardfeel and protection. Whether it’s comfort you’re after or you need of something to absorb the shock of hammering handrails like K-Walks himself, this is the one for you.

Anthony Van Engelen’s AV Rapidweld Pro is every bit as robust as you would expect for a shoe backed by The Champ. Featuring a Vans Pro Skate Waffle outsole for unrivalled boardfeel and fantastic cushioning, thanks to the Ultracush HD insole, the shoe comfortably caresses the heel for a supportive and locked in fit whereas the suede upper is lined with Duracap to ensure you get the most out of AVE signature shoe. The Vans X Spitfire exclusive colourway comes in a deep navy with white leather highlights featuring Spitfire artwork on the side stripe and insole.

Finally, an Era Pro tops off the Vans X Spitfire Wheels Spring 2018 footwear collection in a colourway that burns as bright as Spitfire’s trademark bighead. Classic double wrapped vulcanised constructed, classic Vans waffle sole and classic silhouette – it’s only fitting that one of the most celebrated skate shoes ever made accompanies this collaboration between two of skateboarding’s legacy companies.
