Jeff Grosso’s final Loveletter to LGBTQ+ skateboarding

Wednesday, June 17th, 2020

Jeff Grosso’s final Loveletter to LGBTQ+ skateboarding just went live and stands in testament to the depth of loveliness that our much-missed sage represents. We can only hope that the big pink one is surveying the scene from above and is smiling that unmistakable grin as the Internet reacts to his Loveletter to LGBTQ+ skateboarders the world over. Absolute magic this one.

I’m not going to waste your time by recounting who’s in it, what gets discussed or why it’s an extremely timely embrace of our brother and sisters in arms because, unless you’re stupid, you’ll already appreciate the significance of this being Grosso’s final Loveletter.
We’ve come a long way since the days of women featuring in skate brand adverts purely as eye-candy wearing skate clothing not designed for them, and even more so in the slow but exponentially increasing open acceptance of the huge LGBTQ+ community but there’s still a way to go and this Grosso/Vans release is going to do a lot to expedite that change.

Like I already said, I’m not going to patronise you, you know that this is the perfect send off to one of skateboarding’s most beloved voices. If you ever needed proof of the fact that Jeff Grosso loved the act of skateboarding with all his heart and soul, then this 36 minute video provides it.
We love you Jeff Grosso.

If this has put you in the mood for more of the great man, (and why wouldn’t it?) – head over to our very own Loveletter to Jeff Grosso here.

With the above said, we can also strongly recommend checking out the full-length ‘Euro There’ video from LGBTQ+ skate crew/brand There Skateboards (featuring a bunch of the people interviewed in Grosso’s final Loveletter to skateboarding). We’ve even made it easy for you by embedding it below.
It’s 2020 and there are millions of skateboarders in the world. Let’s try to make our shared universe that little bit more pleasant by trying to be nice to each other, it’s really not that difficult.

Antihero skateboards do it again ‘Arbitrary Function’

Friday, January 3rd, 2020

All I wanted for Christmas was more Grant Taylor footage! Like a scabby Santa, Antihero skateboards came through and dropped a video bomb just in time for the festive season. Like their last full-lengther Destination Unknown, 2019’s Antihero skateboard’s release came in the form of a completely unheralded 15-minute banger.
In an age where people rarely go to the bog without teasing their toilet decision on Instagram for a month beforehand, it’s immensely refreshing to see that Antihero still have the bollocks to just drop a video as heavy as Implosionistic tendencies: Arbitrary Function with almost zero pre-hype.
The reason? Well, they just don’t need to hype it up first. It’s Antihero, it’s going to be sick!

Antihero skateboards do it again

Established in 1995 by early street skating pioneer and one time Santa Monica Airlines and Underworld Element pro skater Julien Stranger, Antihero skateboards appeared at a pivotal time in skateboarding’s development away from the inward-looking overly-technical skateboard scene of the early 1990’s.
Emerging from under the Deluxe umbrella, from the outset Antihero represented the raw underbelly of skateboarding and offered a pure vision of what being a skateboarder meant – regardless of trends or perceived rules.

Antihero skateboards do it again

Their inaugural video release ‘Fucktards‘ (1997) featuring the original team of Julien Stranger, Sean Young, John Cardiel, Eric J and Bob Burnquist firmly established an aesthetic that showcased every style of skating from vert to street and focused on the grimier aspects of the culture.
Anti Hero skateboards‘ instantly recognisable graphical output followed in the same vein with memorable graphics from the likes of Todd Francis (amongst many others) that celebrate the underbelly of the American dream and revel in the realities of street trash, political corruption, vagrancy and the darker side of life.

As the brand grew, the team changed but the underlying philosophy did not – hit the road and skate everything and anything that you encounter.
Antihero‘s video releases to date are numerous and include classics such as:
Fucktards (1997)
Cow (1998)
Two Songs (2002)
Cash Money Vagrant (2003)
Bonus Footage (2006)
and their full-length video Destination Unknown (2014) released in customary fashion with absolutely zero advertising beforehand to worldwide acclaim.

Antihero skateboards do it again

Here’s the timeless 1997 Fucktards in full just to remind you why this Antihero skateboards is now, and always will be, the shit.

When you’ve done that – take your fingers for a stroll over to our webstore and fill your boots as we’ve loads of Antihero merchandise online and ready to roll.

Now remind yourselves why Anti Hero Skateboards is one of the most well respected brands out there. Good reason why skate footwear rulers Vans continue to seek out these collaborations with only the best. “All Hail” Vans x Anti Hero.

The classic Antihero “Fucktards” video. Originally release back in 1997.

The one when Cardiel goes nuts! Or is that even nuttier than before. John Cardiel worship is highly encouraged!

This was the one you just couldn’t find on video. Maybe your mate had a copy of a copy held together with celloptape and the prongs snapped out so you couldn’t record over it. Timeless skateboarding Antihero “Two Songs” from the year 2002.

Tony Trujillo aka TNT = Vans x Anti Hero lifer!

Big poppa Chris Pfanner for the Vans “Propeller” video.

Okay so it’s not classic Grosso footage from the late 80’s but his ‘Love letters to Skateboarding’ episodes are just to entertaining to not mention.

Nike Sb – Daan Van Der Linden

Nike Sb – Daan Van Der Linden

Well the skateboard rumor mill has been bubbling away on this one for a while now. And as the dust settles and when all’s said and done Daan Van Der Linden chooses the Swoosh to leave his long time home of Vans for Nike Sb.

You can only imagine what the Slap forums (other skateboard forums are available) bandwidth is like on this one as every man and his dog will have an opinion. Personally for me (and that stands for sod all) it boils down to shoes to put on his feet along with paying some bills plus having a blast along the way. Remember all footwear brands whether sports giants, part of huge corporations or legitimately skater owned they are all actual “business’s” who have riders to endorse products to try sell more products, end of.

The bit that works great for us skateboarders is that we reap the benefits from these brands pushing riders in our face in terms of coverage. Imagine if Daan Van Der Linden only ever stayed skating down his local car-park and he was never given the opportunity to skate the best spots in the World for his and our entertainment…

Well, form your own opinion but I like how skaters at the top of their game can get payed ‘real’ money nowadays. It’s been said before but look at footballers, basketball players etc… them guys seriously will never work a real job after their career and why shouldn’t it be so for skateboarders who could have life ending (never mind career) injuries at any given moment. Hats off to any skaters getting paid and being given the opportunity to progress what we all love doing. Without this progression of skateboarding we’ll never get to see where this crazy ride will take us next.

Anyway, enough of the ramblings of an old man! Get your view on below as Daan Van Der Linden is seriously one of the best out there right now. Be sure to expect more Daan / Nike Sb style footage forthcoming in the very near future.

Jeff Grosso – Loveletters – John Cardiel Part 2

Tuesday, May 30th, 2017

Jeff Grosso’s Loveletters series for Vans has been providing us with quality entertainment for eight seasons and long may that continue. Now the second part of the John Cardiel episode is here and it’s just as good if not even better than the first. With the same mixture of various interviews, archive footage and photos that reminds us of how gnarly Cardiel, one of skateboarding’s most influential characters really is. Screams, slams, makes, words from most of the Anti Hero team and much much more. John is one of a kind and his contribution to skateboarding is a heavy one, if this doesn’t get you hyped we don’t know what will.

Jeff Grosso – Love Letters -Cardiel

Friday, May 12th, 2017

Yes, yes and to right YES!

New season from Vans ‘Jeff Grosso’s Love Letters To Skateboarding‘ starting off with a serious bang. You by now will be aware of the saying “ALL HAIL CARDIEL” well this just further cements it up more with epic archival footage from the original skateboarding madman John Cardiel!

Way back in the late nineties I had to pleasure to follow the now legendary tour of which John was a part of, yeah I’d watched every video possible with Card’s in it and yes this is the reason we’d traveled the breath of the country to watch him along with the Gonz etc skate our crappy UK parks but not nothing could prepare you for watching Cardiel skate in the flesh. I don’t even say this likely as in this era we where quite acustomed to turning up at Goshen Sports Center (the only vert in the country at the time) to see Tony Hawk and likes tearing it a new one but witnessing Cardiel frothing like a madman and inventing impossible lines at Romford park and tweaking every which way at Leigh On Sea park he’s forever been an all time favorite (I’m pretty much sure I don’t stand alone on this one!)

Enough of the waffle, basically stoked once again to see the next season of Jeff Grosso’s Love Letters To Skateboarding return with a special part one all about John Cardiel.

Get watching now whilst chanting loudly “ALL HAIL CARDIEL!”

Brian Anderson – NY Summer Part

Monday, January 23rd, 2017

Despite having clips in numerous videos, the third installment of Nike SB’s Chronicles series among them, its been about ten years since Brian Anderson released a full part. In that time he has changed board sponsors twice, released a pro shoe, became pretty much the first major pro skateboarder to discuss his homosexuality openly and along with that he’s obviously been smashing skating as well. Joey Digital turned his New York footage from last summer into a rad little edit, appropriately called ‘NY Summer’. So give the play button a click below because we all know Brian Anderson footage is always worthwhile.

Robbie Russo is Pro

Saturday, January 16th, 2016

Carlos Vargas has put together an edit that will not disappoint. Showing you why Anti Hero Skateboards have just turned Robbie Russo Pro, although it’s pretty obvious news as he’s a natural shredder, a concrete destroyer and as stylish as they come. Have a watch above to be blown away because the possibilities on what can be done on a skateboard are endless. I love skateboarding and this edit is pure power, hyped!
