Deeper Understanding – Charlie Birch rides for Palace

Wednesday, September 4th, 2019

Yes, it’s officially true: Charlie Birch rides for Palace.
Now nobody likes to be one of those ‘I knew last week’ bellends but in this instance, I’m claiming it.
You’re not wearing Palace skateboards garms on the number one transmission outlet of skateboarding culture unless you’re riding for them, (well assuming you’re a sponsored skater, rather than just a P-Bomb fan).
As of this week, with the release of Deeper Understanding, the latest in a long line of extremely fucking good Palace online videos, (this time primarily filmed in Japan alongside the opening of their Tokyo store), the squealing Scouse cat has finally been let out of the bag.

Charlie came up the old way – by being an omnipresent teeth-braced face at every event across the UK from the age of 13, generally accompanied by his legend of a dad and/or brother Oliver. Never any bullshit with little man, no kiddy points, no lowered expectations – just pure, simple talent and determination with that distinctive Scouse willingness to go for it at all times.
With his recent switch from the Swoosh to Mackey’s captained New Balance Numeric squad and short (ish) time on Yardsale skateboards – the all new deep voiced Charlie had moved to London, started studying for a Business degree and set forth on a handrail slaying voyage that has led him to exactly where he should be – on Palace.
Now there’s plenty more to talk about as far as Deeper Understanding goes so I’ll cut to the quick here as regards Mr Birch. All praise and props to Charlie for never straying off the path of righteousness and continuing to rip as hard, and be just as nice as he was as a tiny kid, and major cap doffs to Lev and co for giving this beast the support he most definitely deserves (and for using Frankie Goes to Hollywood).
For the geeks amongst you, especially the M62 corridor related ones, know this: Charlie’s entire section is filmed on the hallowed ground of his native Liverpool and includes various classic Scouse spots such as Lime St station’s ‘they look good but they’re awful’ plastic ledges, a kinked rail previously only ever attempted by Scouse 90’s nutters Jon Newby and Nicky Ryan, the Pierhead and of course, those fucking awful stairs that Charlie grew up flinging himself down, (you also get a no push Dave Mackey line so what is there to not like?) One love to Liverpool.

Deeper Understanding - Charlie Birch rides for Palace

With Charlie’s props out of the way – a few words regarding the rest of this excellent video offering from Palace. Number one – it begins with a banger of a joint part shared between P-Bomb OG’s Lucien Clarke and Rory Milanes, both of whom manage to fuck up heavily guarded Japanese skate spots without being dickheads to the overly polite security paid to protect Tokyo’s futuristic architecture. Knucks there as we’re bored of seeing people act like wankers. Following that you’re treated to a brace of dope Danny Brady footage who, as the Palace TM, still finds time to rack up more footage than anyone else other than Charlie. Chewy Cannon, Benny Fairfax, Jamal Smith and Juan Savedra bring up the rear with short but deece appearances in a montage and then, after Charlie – Palace’s newer faces (along with honorary guest and Palace bro Evan Mock – dude who does the back 3) bring Deeper Understanding to a close. Heitor and Kyle are on the road to the very top of the skateboard game and this little shared piece in Deeper Understanding further cements that trajectory.

One last little moment of musing before I go: does the use of the Kate Bush song indicate a homage to Nick Jensen? Or is it a deliberate mind confuser for all of Palace’s younger fans who’ll probably go out and download a bunch of the UK’s most eccentric singer/songwriter off the back of this vid? Or, is it rather a light hearted jab at the amount of shit talked about Palace online by haters and acolytes alike via the lyric, ‘Turn to my computer like a friend…’ Who knows? Deeper Understanding though – deffo banger.
And so, that’s enough – go watch the video – if you fancy linking yourself with some Palace Skateboards product, hit the link here and if Charlie’s addition has put you in mind to purchase some New Balance to support – go check out our extensive range of NB Numeric stuff here.

Peep below for a look into Charlie Birch’s antics when he was about 2 foot shorter and 8 years younger via the excellent independent UK skate video ‘Albion’. Who would’ve thunk back then that in 2019 I’d be typing Charlie Birch rides for Palace…

Trailers for skate videos don’t get much better than that. Well in fact I think it’s the best one ever released to date. Felt like I was watching the next box office film, which in the skateboard world it probably will be. The glimmers of tricks featured have definitely got me hyped to watch Adidas Skateboarding’s next video, Away Days. There’s not much more I can say because to be honest I’m still in shock. My name is Nick ‘Stannerz’ Stansfield and lets just say MAN IS ON A HYPE for this!!
