A double dose of Louie Lopez courtesy of Converse Cons & FA

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2020

A right old treat here with a double dose of Louie Lopez, dropping virtually simultaneously from Converse Cons and FA. Is there a better human representation of a skateboarding come-up based on sheer talent and humility than that of LA’s very own Mr Lopez?
Louie’s skateboarding journey has been documented and under the microscope from the tender age of 13. For many, this attention has proved to be a destructive force, releasing the twin demons of underage insanity and regrettable kiddy-style documentation – for a variety of reasons however, Louie Lopez has managed to swerve this wunderkind curse and mature into one of the most highly rated skaters on the planet.

Louie’s earliest exposure was as the long-haired and brace-wearing mini ripper announced in Globe footwear’s United by Fate (2007) and then cemented into skate lore in his banger 2009 Extremely Sorry part for former sponsors Flip Skateboards.
Despite the expected sniping of the time, aimed squarely at Flip skateboards‘ acquisition of Louie, (along with fellow murder midgets Curren Caples and David Gonzalez) Jeremy Fox, Ian Deacon and Geoff Rowley‘s eye for talent was vindicated once again with all three additions maturing into some of the gnarliest skaters on the planet a few years later.

A double dose of Louie Lopez

This first of this week’s double dose of Louie Lopez comes in the form of a three minute part (we think it’s solid enough to warrant that description) filmed in and around Louie’s native LA during the last 6 months of lockdown. Hands get sliced open by skate-stoppers, the infamous LAX banks get treated to an unfathomable backside noseblunt slide shove it, the Sister Sledge track rules and there’s little to no bullshit over-zoom filming. In short – it’s everything that you could ask for in a clip. Get it watched immediately.

If you’re not satisfied by the Converse Cons ‘Lola’ clip above never fear, as Jason Dill and AVE‘s FA World Entertainment have your back with a slightly shorter, slightly rawer but equally as cracking expose of Louie’s undeniable talents in the form of the ‘The Louie Lopez II’.

Ali Boulala on The Bunt podcast

Friday, July 10th, 2020

Long time fans of the podcast here at Black Sheep, (especially during lock down) so we thought we’d share the news that last month saw Ali Boulala on The Bunt podcast. For those who don’t know already, The Bunt is a long-running skate podcast run by two very funny Canadian skaters. The hosts, Cephas and Donovan have a reputation for securing the guests you want to hear from and for asking hilariously blunt questions.

Over the years since they started (back in 2015/2016) The Bunt podcast has produced some of the funniest and most truthful interviews in skateboarding history with guests ranging from their Canadian friends to the likes of Jake Phelps and Brian Wenning. If you’re not already a fan of their output – we strongly recommend jumping over to their site at The Bunt Live and catching up.

Anyhow, as regards Ali Boulala on The Bunt podcast, get yourselves ready for an uplifting chat with Ali covering everything from the filming of Flip skateboards‘ Sorry video, living with Tom Penny in France, the origins of Baker skateboards and his current involvement in a Swedish-made documentary on his life.
The Bunt guys avoid the much-discussed tragic accident that resulted in the death of Shane Cross and the long-term hospitalisation and subsequent imprisonment of Ali.
If you want to hear that story, then re-visit the Epicly Later’d series on that here.

As we’ve touched on Baker Skateboards above (and below) – it seems sensible to also include the latest video release from them featuring their newest recruit, the insanely talented Jacopo Carozzi, wrecking shop in his native Milan just prior to Italy’s Covid lock down.

In more related Baker connections, the next podcast from The Bunt following the Ali Boulala one above is with Baker OG/owner and current Deathwish skateboards pro Erik Ellington.
As with the Ali Boulala interview above, The Bunt comes through with the insight on this one, plus heavy hilarity regarding the infamous ‘Carlsberg Gap’.

Hope everyone is well out there – don’t forget that our store is now open (for the rest of July) on Fridays and Saturdays 10-5 and Sundays 11-5. Our online webstore is open always for anything you need. Stay safe.

Rough Cut: Louie Lopez’s “West End” Part

Louie Lopez seriously ain’t no joke! As the tiny framed Flip Skateboard’s prodigy to full blown mind blowing Pro. Take the time to witness his silky smooth abilities on a skateboard and take a moment after each ridiculously trick and let them sink in.

Massive fans of his work here at The Black Sheep, the guy just ‘plays’ at skating and makes it look all to simple and fun. Mr Mellow laid back reflects consistently in his huge footage output.

Who else has put out the coverage of Louie!? He’s constantly on one and as the skateboard industry rumor mill is to be believed then his full forthcoming part for Converse Cons is going to be another mind blower!

Again it’s thanks to Thrasher Magazine for putting this remix ‘Rough Cut’ edit out. With over 20 minutes of futuristic skateboarding by Flip Skateboard’s finest. Bear witness and keep them peeled as they say for announcements of his up and coming Cons part. More info from us soon….

Louie Lopez’s “West End” Part For Thrasher

Tuesday, November 28th, 2017

Louie Lopez’s “West End” Part For Thrasher.

Everyone’s saying it but holy hell what a time to put out a part like this with the looming coveted Thrasher ‘Skater Of The Year’ title up for grabs. Louie Lopez was already well on target for achieving the peoples vote with a serious amount of footage throughout 2017 for sponsors Flip Skateboards, Converse Cons, Volcom etc etc… but pretty sure Ladbrookes wouldn’t give you good odds now after the below “West End” part for Thrasher Magazine.

We’ve been a big fan of Louie Lopez watching him grow up under the talent spotting Flip Skateboards and to see how he’s developed a faultless style along with taking skating to the next mental control level yet keeping it looking so effortlessly.

Not to stray from the path of conformity (we are ‘sheep’ after all…) we’re joining in with the bargain-based fun and have team up with Flip Skateboards to offer you a dope deal for Black Sheep Friday.

Finally, as we wouldn’t be able to provide this fantastic offer without the support of Flip Skateboards, we’re revisiting some of our favourites spanning from the lens of Fred French with the iconic ‘Sorry’ and right up to the present. Get watching, get stoked and get ready for Black Friday!

Oh Arto, so much to answer for… A heavyweight contender for ‘best video part of all time’ and the epitome of the phrase ‘would just as good if it came out today’ – no mention of Flip is complete without our favourite Finn’s double-David Bowie curtain call from Sorry.

Yes, more Arto – but who could ever tire of this handsome devil?

One of the gnarliest opening tricks, made even more intense thanks to Lemmy’s opening monologue for Serial Killer, leading straight into one of the finest parts put to screen from Liverpool’s favourite son. Walk on, walk on…

Columbian metalhead and self punishment enthusiast, David Gonzalez took the ender of Flip’s final full length production, Extremely Sorry, and took Thrasher Magazine’s Skater of the Year title for 2012 shortly afterwards, remind yourself why…

Released via Transworld Skateboarding in 2014, Flip’s ‘3’ showcased a fairly fresh faced Alec Majerus before handing the reigns over to Louie Lopez for some casual tech finesse and rounded off by smooth-styled California shredder Curren Caples (accompanied by a great Future Islands track too).

Nike Sb Lance Mountain Chronicles 3

Friday, February 5th, 2016

Lance Mountain took the breath away from each and every skaters lungs last year. Well maybe from those who managed to watch his part in the Nike SB Chronicles Vol. 3 video. His part was released yesterday via the good old internet. If you didn’t watch it the first time around then you’d be mad not to watch it now. A 51 year old ripper who has shocked the world yet again. Not only has he been involved in and contributed a huge amount to the skateboard world for a huge number of years, it seems after watching this there will be many years left in him. I hope filming this part has given him inspiration to film another. An absolute shocker and it would have to be my best part from the video. Apologies to the other skaters featured in the video but I’m sure they’ll agree with me that this shit is dope. It wasn’t just the bowl/park skating I was expecting to see, there is also a number or street clips involved too. My mind is melting! Imagine capturing a glimpse of this legend board-sliding a yet familiar jersey barrier. Bloody brilliant! Have a look above to see what I’m talking about…

Keep up with Lance Mountain on Instagram.

Fancy grabbing yourself the Flip Skateboards P2 Lance Mountain Multi Vato Deck that was featured heavily in the edit? Well hit the link to do http://www.blacksheepstore.co.uk/flip-skateboards.html

Epicly Later’d – Ali Boulala

Friday, December 4th, 2015

Vice Magazine have been documenting some of skateboarding’s finest in their Epicly Later’d series for some time now and who could be more interesting than Ali Boulala. As far as skateboarding goes Ali Boulala has had a huge impact on skateboarding since the early 90s to this very day. Some of you will probably recognize him from his early Flip video parts launching himself down the biggest sets known to man. Pioneering the PD ‘Piss Drunxs’ antics and leading the wild lifestyle we would associate with the yet familiar crew.

ali boulala

Since the birth of Vice magazine’s – Epicly Later’d (curated by Patrick O’Dell) Ali has been in for a series wince it first started. Although it was unfortunately postponed, due to a drunken motorbike accident involving both Flip professionals Shane Cross and Ali Boulala. This tragically left Ali in a coma and even worse took the life of Shane Cross. In this 4 part series you can expect to see the start of Ali and what his life was like growing up in Sweden, then traveling to California, becoming a skateboard celebrity and the effects that had on his life. Then finally the last few years of how Ali has rehabilitated from addiction and injury to rebuild his life in Stockholme after the accident.

Get the kettle on, digestives at the ready and learn more about the life of one of skateboarding’s legends..

Part one – The Original Baker Boy

Part Two – Remote Control Cars and Being A ‘Piss Drunk’

Part Three – The Crash That Ruined Everything

Part 4 – Opening Up About Life After Skateboarding

An emotional but interesting watch.

Some Must See Sections

Thursday, November 26th, 2015

As myself (Stannerz) and Sexual Stu were working in the notorious new Black Sheep Store the other weekend we were surrounded by a load of skate rats asking every question under the sun. So we decided to ask a few back which were….

Who had, in your opinion, the best section in Flip Sorry?

To the response that shocked us into an early grave….

What’s Flip Sorry?

At this point we were losing faith in the skate youth but we kept concentration and thought alright, you may have missed that one but you’ve heard of Arto Saari, Tom Penny, Rune Glifberg etc right?

Another shocking response….

No never, who are they?

From this I thought it would be compulsory to post a few must see sections that some of you may never have set eyes on and should’ve by now…..

To start of with and finally put an end to this misery we have Tom Penny and Arto’s section from Flip Skateboards ‘Sorry’ that was released in 2002. They’re are some other incredible sections in this video so if you can, find the full length feature online. The sequel was ‘Really Sorry’ and finally ‘Extremely Sorry’ even later in life. All a must see!

Next we have Eric Koston’s section from the infamous ‘Yeah Right’. Created by Girl Skateboards in 2003. It was for the time and even now a mind blowing video. Watch Koston’s first line and I’m pretty sure you’ll be hooked!

Transwold also in 2003 released Free Your Mind. A good year for skateboarding as this is yet another incredible video. We have Dan Drehobl’s part here who is a transition king but don’t stop there as the rest of the video is really worth watching.

Not long after in 2004 Chocolate skateboards released the Hot Chocolate Tour. It isn’t just amazing skating that is featured but also interviews with the team. Gives you a feel for what life on the road would be like when touring on skate trips. It was really hard to choose from this one but I went with Mike York since he’s not only a stylish skater but also a really nice dude.

Heath Kirchart.

and another!

Jason Dill is one of the best. His part in Habitat’s Mosaic, too good! Song choice on point, skating is next level. You’d be stupid not to appreciate this section.

Stevie Williams in The DC Video. One of the biggest and best G’s to ever step foot on a board. Big poppa!

Got to appreciate a vert section too and why not Bob Burnquist’s part from Es ‘Menikmati’ which was released in 2000. Bob’s a switch killer so see if you can figure out what stance he actually is from this part, you’ll struggle.

So far the sections have been from over the seas but don’t forget the UK/Europe has also seen some incredible shredders put out parts. Here’s a few from our roots that is gritty UK skateboarding. Starting with Scotland’s John Rattray, this dude is nothing but unstoppable.

Over the years Blueprint have brought out plenty of really powerful DVDs. There was ‘Waiting For The World’, ‘Lost and Found’, ‘Make Friends With The Colour Blue’ but my favorite of all time has to be First Broadcast. When I first set eyes on this video I was out skating the streets in a matter of seconds after watching it. Maybe because it was easier to relate to the gritty spots the UK has to offer that are right on our door step. Nick Jensen steals the show and due too the recent Isle Skateboards ‘Vase’ video that will soon be on sale in store I thought it makes sense to show this section.

Finally to finish off we have my favorite section of all time and that’s Snowy’s from Landscape’s Portraits. It also has a powerful song choice with Manchester’s Stone Roses ‘Elephant Stone’. It was filmed and edited by one of skateboarding’s best filmmaker’s Mr Christopher James Massey. Chris sadly passed away recently, such sad news but he left us with many memories including this masterpiece that is ‘Portraits’.

RIP CHRIS MASSEY!!!

Thank you for watching. There are many more sections that are not included as the list goes on but here’s a good few to get you started. Skateboarding is the best and it’s a real privilege to be part of something so great. Peace.
