Louie Lopez and Tiago Lemos keep it pumping for 2021

Saturday, March 27th, 2021

The dynamic duo of Louie Lopez and Tiago Lemos have both dropped nuggets of respective gold this week.
Two of our (and no doubt yours too) favourite non-SOTY winners just keep on producing.
First up is Brazilian power house Tiago Lemos with a short but banging commercial for Primitive skate.
Once memorably described on the venerable PWBC News as skating like ‘Enrique Lorenzo on high grade steroids’ – Tiago can do little wrong on our eyes. Yes, it was the over waist high switch backtail at MACBA that made him globally famous but there’s much more to him than that. Running mega pop on a Kareem Campbell level with a trick bag as wide as his smile – just sit back and soak up the supernatural skills.
State of that nollie crooks!

Louie Lopez and Tiago Lemos

Once you’ve digested big man casually leaping over waist-high bump to bars, prepare your eyes for another onslaught. We post about Louie Lopez a lot and have done since his midget days on Flip skateboards. If ever there was proof of Flip’s talent-spotting prowess then it’s the trajectory of this Hawthorne, L.A. raised ripper. Fresh off the back of his recent full length part for Converse Cons back in December, Louie is back again with four and a half minutes of truly outstanding skating for Fucking Awesome (or do we call it ‘FA World Entertainment’ now in tacit acknowledgement that ‘Fucking Awesome’ is an embarrassing name?).
Nomenclature issues aside – baldy comes through as always with 3 minutes of amazing lines bleeding into a minute and a half long ‘hammer section’. Filmed at a variety of presumably Covid-liberated downtown spots, along with a smattering of classics: watch out for the Venice ledges banger and a brief ressurection of the OG Beryl bank to curb. Very little more needs to be said honestly – the guy’s a pisstake and, as the blipvert of his t-shirt says ‘You must remember shit’. Cryptic? Perhaps. Banging? Undeniably.

Anthony Van Engelen – AVE appreciation for the new Vans AVE Pro shoe

Monday, August 26th, 2019

With the release of Anthony Van Engelen‘s latest Vans AVE Pro Skate Shoe it seems a little redundant to not use that as a justified jumping off point for a little appreciation of the man himself.
Fortuitously, but not unsurprisingly, Free Skate Mag, (in association with video archivist and remixer Jan Maarten Sneep AKA @memoryscreen on Instagram) have taken a little of the legwork out of this endeavour via today’s release of an AVE Greatest Hits video which you can see above. Watch that first, then perhaps show your appreciation for the man with the undisputed greatest switch 360 flip in the history of skateboarding by bagging up a pair of his latest Vans Pro Skate kicks here.
Anthony Van Engelen - AVE appreciation

With the above said, it’s probably a good point to insert some of the classic AVE parts that the above Memory Screen ‘Best Of’ clip has cannibalized, if for no other reason than to be entirely clear about just how fucking awesome (pun intended) this Californian maniac is.
As we’re on a Vans tip, there seems to be no better place to start than the Raw Files edit of his recent(ish) Vans Propeller section, containing the raw visuals of his epic section and including everything from alley oop back smiths in Californian ditches to gap out to boardslides on kinked rails in Belper, Derbyshire.
If you haven’t already watched this one you’re slipping, hard.

Following up from the Propeller Raw Files, we’ve got AVE’s Alien Workshop‘s swansong section (before he left with fellow AWS alumni Jason Dill to form FA and Hockey Skateboards) which is absolutely banging and contains yet more evidence as regards his crown as the king of the switch tres, along with a brace of switch and fakie handrail majesty, a Danny Way cameo and further exploration around the ‘Over the Top‘ handrail genre first invented by Sean Sheffey (last trick in his Mouse part here for the nerds). If you don’t like this, you’re dead to us. 3.22 in for the switch tres of dreams!

Anthony Van Engelen - AVE appreciation for the new Vans AVE Pro shoe

Next up is another timeless classic from the vaults of the pre-Internet Internet with the theme tune that anyone over the age of 30 has etched into their memory – namely the 411 Video Magazine Alien Workshop Industry Section. For those of you too young to appreciate the impact that 411VM had on the global skate scene, or of the implication of the phrase ‘Industry Section‘ as far as skateboarding culture is concerned – hit the hyper links in this here sentence for a brief overview. Then go download the the track ‘The Boxcar‘ by Sol for the ultimate skate earworm. Mr Dibbs and peak Alien – fuck yes!
(By the way – if you’re wondering what the intro song for this 411 banger is – worry not – it’s called ‘Little Ethnic Song‘ and it’s by Dinosaur Jr – it also features as the intro for Alien Workshop’s first video release, the epoch-forming Memory Screen – hence the Dutch dude’s Instagram handle – watch Memory Screen in full here and brainwash yourselves.

Obviously there are way too many AVE parts to post for the space we have here, so let’s end it on a under-appreciated classic, again from his time on the Sovereign Sect, alongside team mates Jason Dill, Dylan Rieder, Jake Johnson, Omar Salazar, Kevin Terpening, Grant Taylor, Mikey Taylor and Gilbert Crockett. It’s hard to top this one – the ender section from the 2012 Transworld Skateboarding’s ‘Cinematographer’ video, filmed and edited by Benny Magliano who is now in charge of Hockey Skateboards output.

I’ve purposely not included AVE’s DC part here since most of the best stuff from that section is included in the Memory Screen remix at the very top but, if you’ve never seen it – go watch AVE destroy Barcelona here.
Oh yeah, it also has the best switch manual switch tres out that a human will ever perform too.

That was enjoyable – now go bask in switch front crooks glory and push three times faster at every obstacle than is necessary.

Still thirsty for more AVE? Go check this pre FA Anthony Van Engelen interview here, and this Greg Hunt piece for further back stories here.

Vans Skate Berle Pro – UK Release

Now we’ve been #BigFansOfHisWork for a while (see our Black Sheep Store instagram for hashtag reference) so to see the Vans Skate Berle Pro come to fruition is extremely welcomed.

Elijah Berle’s Vans history dates back to 2012. In this year Berle’s all out attack gained him number one spot at Tampa AM along with Transworld, Skateboarder and The Skateboard Mag covers. Plus topping the boom year out with TSM’s ‘Year Best AM’ award. Since the initial onslaught Berle established himself firmly on the ever dope Chocolate Skateboards team. Then proceeding to knock out one hell of a memorable part for ‘Pretty Sweet.’

Moving on from Berle’s first introduction to the skate scene, his much anticipated debut Vans part “No Other Way” did not disappoint. Initially gaining coverage through the Vans Skate Instagram and social media platforms the below Thrasher Magazine “Raw Files” shows what a serious powerhouse Elijah Berle has become.

Following on from Elijah’s long term sponsorship with Chocolate Skateboards he departed ways for the new kids on the block. Welcoming Berle with open arms Jason Dill and Vans riders Anthony Van Engelen invited the style master to join the elite Fucking Awesome Skateboards team. Known for the diverse mix of riders with an emphasise on raw skateboarding Elijah became the perfect fit with a much deserved pro model following soon after. All this whilst working towards his next Vans Skate part in the form of the highly regarded “Propeller” video. Tirelessly filmed and edited by Greg Hunt this section cemented Elijah’s professional status. Featuring a heavy mix of transition skateboarding and true veteran style street skating this became to go to video part for all round pre-skate hype.

Enjoy the “Propeller Raw Files” below courtesy again of Thrasher Magazine.

So with the short background above of Elijah Berle and his ever so sweet history with Vans Skate Shoes. It’s no wonder after the unquestionable ridiculous footage from the past few years Vans have done the right thing and let Elijah design his own Pro skate shoes from the ground up.

Utilising the newly produced Vans “Wafflecup” along with input from Elijah all the way. The new Vans Skate Berle Pro silhouette is designed with the mantra “Less Is More.” To explain this further the idea behind a skate shoe with no foot-bed inserts is purely to achieve the all important board feel. To make this happen without compromising the impact protection and day to day comfort Vans Pro Skate have incorperated the much loved “Wafflecup” construction along with the comfort enhancing LUXliners. Without getting to technical on the makeup of Berle’s first ever Vans Pro shoes it basically fits like a (foot?) glove and protects as a Cupsole does.

Also as standard from all Vans Pro Skate, Berle’s shoe features the Vans Duracap under layer upper reinforcement along with the longer lasting Vans Original Waffle sole compound.

The global release date (including the UK) for the Vans Berle Pro is set for Saturday February 9th 2019. Vans always come correct with delivery of product and we’re 100% guaranteed of receiving all available colour-ways for release day.

In the interim take a good hard luck above at the Vans Skate Berle Pro skate shoes and expect some heavy release footage/photos and general hype from the Vans Skate Instagram

As you’d expect Elijah’s been running the samples for a little while and put out teaser pictures of what’s to come from his debut Vans Pro Skate Shoe. Give the style master himself a follow for all things Berle, Vans and FA Entertainment related.
