Jake Johnson Mixtape

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2017

Quasi Skateboards and Jake Johnson are some firm favorites here at the store. Jake mixes a classic style with a modernised bag of tricks, so when we saw that this remix edit had landed on the web from VHYes we were hyped to say the least. Mixing some of his best clips from the GX 1000 edits, Midfield and various other sources, with cameos from fellow Quasi riders Gilbert Crockett and Tyler Bledsoe this is perfect for that pre skate buildup that you need. Can’t wait for Quasi full length!

Gilbert Crockett Interview

Friday, February 10th, 2017

What was it like having Jamie Thomas in charge back when you rode for Mystery and Fallen?

It was cool, I think he pushed me a lot and I definitely appreciate everything he did for me, I don’t think I would be sitting right here if it wasn’t for him.

Is his reputation as ruthless as it’s rumoured to be?

(Laughing), yeah probably. At the same time he gets people to do shit. He’s really good at motivating you or getting you to do a trick you don’t think you can do and things of that nature.

I heard he’s no stranger to using money to motivate people to land tricks. How much do you reckon that you won from that?

I grew my hair out for a year and he gave me a hundred dollars from a bet. I used to get paid by the trick that was video worthy, I used to work in the warehouse. I used to work half days which gave me $24 and some change or something like that. So instead of doing that, he was like “Every trick you get, I’ll pay you what you’re making in the warehouse,” so I stopped working in the warehouse and started filming.

What’s the strangest thing you have witnessed Chris Nieratko do?

Oh shit. Well I met him when he was sober so I don’t have any of the crazy stories that old Nieratko was doing. I might have to skip that one.

What was your first tattoo and how long did it take you get completely covered?

‘CELLOUT’ – which was a skate video me and friends made on cell phones. I got my arms mostly covered in like a year.

Who is ‘Special Gilby’?

(Laughing), I can’t even remember how that started but it’s basically a really ghetto version of myself. I think it might have started on a Vans tour when I was tired of doing demos. I did an interview like that for Skate Warehouse I think it was. Just being on the road for a while is pretty much what spawned it.

What’s the most intense thing you have witnessed AVE do whether on a skateboard or not?

Let’s see… One thing that sticks out is a session where he was trying to backside grind this handrail where you have to ollie over a curb at the top. It was a tall handrail anyways so he was battling it. I think we were in Australia and the team was hanging out near the spot and he got so pissed that he was throwing his board. Everyone just dispersed and was freaked out by being around him and scared of how angry he was. We just left the spot, (laughs). I remember being blown away by that.

Oh actually, the first trip I went on with him… This was the first time being around him. We were at a spot and Dylan [Rieder] was skating a rail. We were in Miami and AVE came back with a Cuban sandwich. It was all greasy and he started eating it really fast and he just freaked out after a few bites and focused the sandwich on the sidewalk after a few bites and was so disgusted by it. I was blown away, (laughs). That was my first impression…

How much say do you, Jake Johnson and Tyler Bledsoe all have in who gets on Quasi?

It’s a pretty tight ship, I think if one of us said ‘no’ and the other two said ‘yes’ I don’t think someone would get on but I think it’s probably different every time. I don’t really know what would happen like that.

There has been rumors of a video, can you give anything away about that at all?

Yeah, they’ve been filming it for a while, Dick and Josh have been and now Justin. Other dudes have been doing other shit, Tyler just put that part out [All Clear OK] and Jake has been doing GX1000 stuff, and I’ve been working on Gospel so hopefully we’ll start working on it soon.

Is that going to be a full length?

Hopefully, but not like years and years of working on it.

If you had to fight any teammate, past or present, who it be?

(Laughing), oh shit. Who would that be? God damn. I’ll say Daniel Lutheran just because he’s my boy.

Any Vans rider on Quasi who would it be?

Dan Lu, I love him.

Best pro skateboarder that dropped off or went AWOL?

Anthony Pappalardo.

Do you care about politics?

I do not care. I mean I care but I try as hard as I can to stay ignorant to it because I know it’s not going to bring me anything but down. So, I don’t really want to be involved.

Finish this sentence – “You should buy my shoe…”

So you can skate like me! (Laughs).

Quasi Skateboards

Thursday, August 20th, 2015

Ever since the demise of Alien Workshop skateboarders across the world were waiting for the aftermath which came in the form of ‘The Mother Collective’. Everything seemed good in the world until last month when Mother announced they had to change their name to ‘Quasi Skateboards’. Have a look at the ‘Jenkem mag‘ interview with the founder to see why.

Quasi Skateboards‘ main intentions are “Paying the team, independence, free boards. No rules.”. Letting some of skateboarding’s finest let loose in doing what they do best. Sounds good to me. Yes, it’s another board company for you to indulge into, which may be hard as many are popping up every other week.

But let me just put it out there… This is definitely one to watch out for. They’ve already sold 3 months worth of stock in just 3 weeks under-estimating the demand. So as you can tell they’re already flying off the shelves. Later today (20/8/15) you can expect to see Quasi on sale here at The Black Sheep Store. Hyped!

The graphics are looking dope, simple and pure yet the pro models are reflecting the pro to the best they can. Main focus at the minute is the boards but the apparel, that is still strong will increase in time. Focusing purely on skateboarders, really excited to see this company grow.

There’s also word of a video being made which is exciting. Mainly because you’ll see the likes of Gilbert Crockett, Jake Johnson, Tyler Bledsoe and a few more additions to the team in the near future shredding Quasi. Really powerful crew! It’s a shame ‘Mother’ couldn’t have been kept although the way I look at it, its the same brand, only a different name but to be honest none of that will matter in a few weeks. Keep them eyes peeled!

Still not sure what the deal is, well why not watch these two sections from the new Quasi Skateboards team members Mr Tyler Bledsoe and Jake Johnson. Jake’s section from this years Static 5 then a dope Tyler Wu Tang remix part. Take note as these two could be some of the most stylish skaters to set foot on a board. Now a Quasi board…

House Of Vans Skate Wear Test

Wednesday, October 15th, 2014

So I was on holiday, chilling in a static caravan in Cornwall when I got a text off Tez. What the bloody hell does he want? Mans on holiday chilling, ya get me ? Surprisingly it wasn’t to do with work….well kinda! It turned out that the nice people at Vans had invited a couple of Black Sheep representatives to go down to London, to the House of Vans to help them out in a wear test. Having never ( yes you read it right! never!) been to London, the possible chance of getting some free product and the chance of meeting up with Black Sheep rider and House Of Vans manager Rob Smith and assistant Wazza Dowd for an overdue beer was an opportunity not to be missed!

Having got the train from Piccadilly we eventually arrived at Euston a couple of hours later, first stop was to make way through the sea of people to get outside for a ‘comfort break’ and of course the #sexontour instagraming began! Then it was time to jump on the tube to Waterloo, I’ve heard many things about this tube lark, no talking, no making  eye contact and all that, but thankfully it was pretty quiet on the black line that afternoon! ( thank god! ) so I didn’t have the worst tube experience. So we’d reached Waterloo and all that was left was the short walk to the House Of Vans, the excitement was building! I was looking at the skyline to see if i could see any of the famous landmarks, but all I could see was that dildo-esc tube of glass known as the Shard ! We turned around a corner and we were there, I was surprised it was so close by, I thought we were going to have to go on a fair mooch, then we were met by a familiar face on our arrival!

The pleasantries began, handshakes, fist pumps and the general hows life conversation. We all chatted amongst ourselves for a few minutes then was ushered into the park so that things could get underway. We were each given a locker and inside was a Vans tote bag filled with a couple of goodies and most importantly the shoes that we were there to test. I was stoked to see that they were a pair of Gilbert Crockett Pro’s !

And these mega sick socks!

We all gathered in the cinema room to watch a presentation hosted by product manager Juss Apivala and Alexis Jauzion. They took us through the design concept of the shoe and there was a short video of Gilbert himself talking about his involvement and ideas which were used in the whole process. They explained to us about the new Wafflecup soles that had been used, this technology gives a more secure and cushioned sole with the full flexibility of a vulcanized one. We were also told about the Duracap technology which is basically making already tough and durable suede that bit more better for longer lasting shoes. The techno chat was over and it was time to put them to the test with a session in the park. Having never been inside before I was eager to explore and the first thing I saw was the bowl section on my left, its pretty deep and whippy, transition has never been one of my strong points so I decided to spectate till it was quieter later on! People were skating this like it was nothing – ridiculous! The next room is the mini ramp room with a couple of different sized ramps on either side.  The final room is the street section consisting ob a bank, across and down ledge, a couple of quarters and one or two more street-ish obstacles.

Had a decent couple of hours in the park, people were smashing it! If you’ve not been yet its worth a day out! That bowl is pretty gnarly to say the least! After having a good skate it was time to sample the beverages and scran that was on offer! Some tasty burgers and cans of IPA were consumed in the cafe area, we chilled out for a bit and had a chit chat, then Wazza and Rob mentioned a pub near their gaff round the corner that would be ideal for a pint!

We met the doggers  just across the way from the park and the plan was to head to the ‘old man’ pub further down street. By now it appeared that most people had put having a pint at the top of the agenda as we were joined by a merry crew of at least twenty strong skateboarders taking up a large front seating area at the pub. Time quickly ticked away and before we knew it the time had come start with the mission back home, back onto a now slightly busy tube to Euston for our two hour journey back to Piccadilly.
Massive thanks to Vans for the invitation, big thank you to all at House Of Vans for having us and big ups to everyone that was there making the day and session what it was!  In a bit London ! I’ll be back!
