This – new video from Emerica footwear

Sunday, September 26th, 2021

Of all the brands within the Sole Tech stable, I think it’s safe to say that Emerica footwear is the one whose identity has been the most fixed throughout its life. With the exception of its earliest incarnation (see below), Emerica footwear‘s output has been green-tinged, has erred on the side of tech-gnar and has had the unmissable stamp of Jon Miner’s involvement all over it. Whilst fashions in skate culture have changed almost as quickly as Covid restrictions over the last decade, Emerica has remained steadfast. No gimmicks, no bullshit – just straight up ripping.
Unsurprisingly, ‘This’, Emerica footwear‘s latest video release stays true to this. Lots of rails, lots of scarily desolate-looking Southern Californian ditches and school yards and a heavy stoner rock vibe.

This kicks off with what looks at first glance like a shared part featuring Colin Provost and Justin ‘Figgy’ Figueroa. Whilst these two maniacs are undoubtedly part of the vanguard of modern ATV hammer skating, neither one of them would be the first person I’d turn to if I needed help writing an essay on anything more intellectually challenging than the best way to slug Budweiser. What they may lack in brain cells they more than make up for in skateboarding bannister gallantry however.
After Figgy supermans himself down about twenty stairs onto his cheekbone, it becomes clear that this shared opening ‘part’ is actually nothing more than an intro and a hint of things to come from this duo.
Long time Emerica head and up rail innovator Leo Romero starts This off proper, closely followed by a brace of newer additions to the roster.
Extra props go out to the editor here for bucking the current trend of assuming that the viewer knows who every skateboarder in the world is and ommitting titles. Note to every contemporary video maker who isn’t Jon Miner – ‘stop being bellends – we ALL WANT NAME TITLES!’.
Erik Winkowski has a short but incredibly impressive section after the initial montage proving once again that you can do anything you want on a 1987 Jeff Kendall shape, if you’re supernaturally gifted at skateboarding.
Norway’s Kevin Baekkel has a load of wild footage, lots of which was in his his recent Free Skate Mag interview. Some of the spots this nutter steps to are truly frightening. Black Metal!
Jon Dickson still looks one of the dinner guests from A Texas Chainsaw Massacre and, as ever, smashes the doors off with mad tech gnar.
Kevin ‘Spanky’ Long continues on his sober redemption arc and produces yet another quirky section filled with creative twists, wallie variations and the odd Natas Kaupas reference: well done mate.
It’s left to Beavis and Butthead (AKA Figgy and Provost) to close off This with the shared part that you think you’re watching at the start. The two numbskulls put their lack of impulse control to full effect and take down some of the heaviest kinked rails and bump to neck high fence spots since their last appearance.
All in all, this will delight Emerica footwear fans and all but the most militant vert heads will find something to enjoy.
This is Skateboarding. This is Emerica Footwear. This is…This.

As referred to above – here’s a reminder of Emerica’s pre-green video history. If you’ve not seen it before, enjoy Emerica’s first video release ‘Yellow’ from 1997.

Spanky – Made Chapter 2 B-Sides

Tuesday, October 25th, 2016

A few years ago Kevin ‘Spanky’ Long disappeared from the Baker and Emerica rosters. Since then, while filming for Made Chapter 2 – a video he thought he would have no part in, got his pro board back on Baker Skateboards. Made chapter 2 was one the biggest videos of the year and now the B-Sides are doing the rounds. The 11 minutes of footage that was posted by Thrasher Magazine shows how Spanky’s section came together. Some people have said this is his come back part but he never really fully went away, lets just say its his resurgence. After years in the skateboarding spotlight he’s ripping more than ever.
