1990s Manchester skate footage from Rik Cooper

Tuesday, April 21st, 2020

One of the few skateboarding-specific upsides to the current Corona Virus lock down is the emergence of loads of previously unseen archive footage from every corner of the globe with the recent release of 1990s Manchester skate footage from Rik Cooper being the most locally specific gold recently unearthed.
For those unfamiliar with Rik Cooper, he was a well known Manchester skater during the BBC Kerbs and Town Hall era who scored a fair bit of coverage in the skate mags of the early 90’s , but sadly, not as much as his skill and style deserved (Click here for his 1991 cover of UK Skate Action magazine). Alongside Rik were names such as Femi Bukunola, Darren Mottershead, Si Robson and many others who laid the foundations for MCR’s thriving street scene long in the distant past.

Over the last few weeks Rik Cooper has started uploading classic Manchester street footage stretching back to the early 90’s featuring many of the main MCR heads of the period, most of which hasn’t been seen before outside of their immediate friendship group. The first Vimeo release is above crammed full of 1990s Manchester skate footage from Rik Cooper with such a 90’s atmosphere to it that it almost transports me back to a time when my ankles didn’t ache walking across the room.

Manchester Skateboarding V2 from Rik Cooper on Vimeo.

The second release dropped on Rik Cooper’s Vimeo a few days ago and contains even more banging street stuff with impeccable backside tailslides from the man himself, plus a brace of BBC Kerbs footage of the crew and a glimpse into how different Manchester city centre looked nearly three decades ago. Whether you know these guys or not – we strongly recommend that you delve straight into this treasure trove of Mancunion skate history and cross your fingers that Rik Cooper keeps uploading footage as he finds it.

Whilst we’re on the subject of 1990s Manchester skate footage – peep below for a little bit more archive Femi Bukunola skating courtesy of Black Sheep‘s main man himself. The whole video is worth watching too for a glimpse into the early 90’s skate and BMX in the city, along with archive clips of Tom Penny, Geoff Rowley and numerous others.

Cottonopolis Video – Manchester Skateboarding

So it’s been a hot minute since we see Sean Lomax going it alone again for another full length production of documenting the Manchester Skateboarding scene. If you seen any of Sean’s past work you’ll know his integrity and down right unique sick way he captures such a vibrant scene. We’ve compiled some of his finest ‘skateboarding’ work for you below but watch and be aware that all this work is made outside of his real job of doing high end TV production filming. The dedication is always a true reflection of Lomax’s craft and the finished product is always something that stands the test of time.

This is not for those lurkers just after the free beer whilst squinting at a little monitor, this is sure to be a more rowdy yet civilized affair. Entry on the door will be a donation of just £4.00 and we’ve been advised the younger skaters may attend in the company of a responsible adult. Yes the scene is strong here and the amount of sponsored skaters within such a small proximity lends itself to being the most ever productive skateboarding scene the UK has ever witnessed. Big up to all the featured skaters no matter who you rider for it’s always inspiring to see such a tight crew as it was and how it should be. And obvious props to Sean for his continued documentation of the above mentioned skate scene. Always got big love for the Independent producers, artist, photographers, retailers etc as the true shine always reflects in there chosen art. Graystone Skatepark Manchester – Black Sheep Family

One recent mid winter evening we where cordially invited to go check out the newest indoor skate park for Manchester. Graystone Action Sports Academy Manchester is somewhat different to the dark, dingy skate-parks we’ve all grown up with. Instead your welcomed with cleanliness, good lighting, one seriously impressive layout by the FourOneFour park builders and to top it all off you can enjoy some chef made food and (for the non-drivers) partake in an arrange of beverages.

We’ve been told there’s more to come from this Manchester based facility to add to the trampoline, snowboard foam pit jump and general craziness of the place. Expect a sprung floor insulation, ninja climbing centre, on site yoga classes and much, much more. At this point let me just state the square footage of the place still remains around 80% pure heavenly Russian birch skate-park paradise.

Huge thanks for the invite and session. Get your viewing pleasure on below and see the fruits of labour from that recent winter evening session. As you may be aware the #BlackSheepFamily go off at any given opportunity so it’s no surprise they bagged a minute and half’s worth of footage with more to spare.

Featuring Black Sheep Store team riders Harry Lintell, Seb Batty, Lucien Costello, Sam Mason and the latest young-gun recruit and all around terrain killer Leo James. All filmed in just a two hour session followed by beer, bants and fat cut chips for afters. Thanks again to Graystone Action Sports Academy for the hook up.

Props to Lewis Royden and Will Berry from Amfas Skateboards for the filming & editing duties.

Go follow Graystone Action Sports Academy Instagram for more details on opening hours, session times, prices and more.

Thunder Trucks x Black Sheep Store – Lucien Costello

So as the story goes we’re celebrating our 10 Years Anniversary here at The Black Sheep Store. Early talks within the walls of Black Sheep ended with the idea of approaching a select few of our favorite brands and seeing if we could work together for some mutual collaborative celebrations. Fast forward to an unexpected visit from Deluxe (self proclaimed) ‘Janitor’ Jim Thiebaud over to Thunder Trucks UK distributor Shiner. Obviously we gratefully took the time and sat down to put the wheels (or trucks as you may) into action. At this point we’re having self doubt, obviously we’re sat mumbling through various life topics till the subject of collaborating is mentioned. Yes the nerves where kicking in and the thoughts of ‘have they even heard of our store in rainy Manchester’ started arising. All the uncalled for worrying over and with the backing of skateboarding brand royalty we’re just straight up hyped to bring this collaboration to fruition! As some will know the guys from Deluxe just do it ‘properly’ and have been bringing skateboarding’s most realist brands and consistently backing the skate stores that bring it to the masses.

Massive, massive thanks to all at Shiner Distribution and the good folk at Deluxe SF for putting this special release together. Collaborations like this for us are straight up heart warming and the global connection and hard work dedication of skateboarders is reinforced yet again.

Now to the edit with newly recruted Thunder flow rider Lucien Costello. It’s been said before but your sure to be seeing more from Lucien (once he figures out how good he is,haha.) Get your viewing pleaseure below and see what he’s capable of filming within a 24 hour time slot. Fine work Lucien and look forward to the ever delayed Black Sheep ‘Welcome Part’!

Again big thanks to Shiner’s social media lord and all round top bloke James ‘Danger’ Kenning for the edit.

Ricky Davidson – Winter In The City Avenue Skateboards

Ricky Davidson – Winter In The City Avenue Skateboards

If you’ve ever frequented the Pump Cage skate park you may of come across the unassuming friendly Australian that is Ricky Davidson. Seriously one of the nicest Manchester’s skate scene import since Jiri Bulin. Plus along with being super grounded and all round good dude Ricky as you may of witnessed has some serious talent on a skateboard! His style to me is a like a Jason Adams, Wade Speyers modern street skating mix. And with those sort of credentials he’s one of the best up and comer in Manchester right now.

Cast your mind back to 2016 when Ricky stomped all over many a Manchester skate spots with his debut ‘Ender’ and ‘Official Welcome’ section for #01FUCKIN61

The above ridiculous part ended up premiering via Transworld Skateboard Magazine. Not a bad entry to the minds of skateboarders Worldwide eh…

avenue-skateboards

Enough of my ramblings as this blog should be about Ricky’s first official video outing for Manchester based Avenue Skateboards. Obvious shout outs to Vague Skate Magazine for putting this out to the Worldwide web. Also if like Ricky you like beer hit the link??? Random, yes but Black Sheep’s own Ricky Davidson graces the Northern Monk beer collaboration with Vague Skate Mag latest joint outing. Beer can photography by straight up grafter and good guy Reece Leung that graces the latest loral hops 5.7% lager.
