March roundup: Ace trucks and Krooked skateboards

Sunday, April 25th, 2021

Steady month for videos so far with Ace trucks and Krooked skateboards surfing the momentum of Quasi’s April opener. First up (there) is a belter of a montage from Ace trucks featuring their diverse team. Enjoi’s Danish superhuman Didrik ‘Deedz’ Galasso opens it open with a brace of insane looking spots and a cameo from fellow Dane and Polar skateboards rider Ville Wester. What follows is 8 minutes of short contributions from the likes of Leo Baker, Max Palmer, Raven Tershay, Ronnie Sandoval, Palace skateboardsCharlie Birch and our very own Black sheep family member Harry Lintell. If this one doesn’t get you interested in swapping your undercarriage up and trying out Ace trucks then your eyes are probably made of chewing gum.

Next up is another unbelievably fantastic release from DLXSF’s Mark Gonzales led vehicle Krooked skateboards. ‘Magic Art Supplies’ is nominally an introductory vehicle for Krooked skateboards new blood Eddie Cernicky and Caleb McNeely, both of whom come through hard. Cernicky opens this 18 minute banger up with a brace of insane wallride tricks and heavy OG San Francisco spot lurking, (think China Banks, EMB and the hills). Caleb McNeely’s part serves as his official welcome to the team and delivers, with everything from 360 flips over full sized bins to a new variation for the weary JKown gap. Good shit.
There are little Gonz clips in between each part, some of which looked to have been self-filmed on his laptop, plus the best frontside invert you’re likely to see a 50 year old do this decade.

With the above said, whilst this is presented as an intro to Krooked skateboards newest riders, it is Krooked skateboards OG Mike ‘Manderson’ Anderson who takes the last 5 minutes with a full part of epic proportions. Despite being incredible forever, Manderson is a somewhat underappreciated and under the radar figure we feel, but this part will more than do the shouting that he’s too modest to do for himself.
Basically – fucking hell! You’ll know when you see it. Insane.

Go peep our huge range of Krooked skateboards if this one’s got your toes itching.
Enjoy the sun!

Mark Gonzales adidas Aloha Super Wallenberg skate shoe exclusive

Friday, November 1st, 2019

Mark Gonzales adidas Aloha Super Wallenberg skate shoe exclusive to Black Sheep.

Inspired by Mark Gonzales’ 1991 christening of a spot that has gone on to be legendary in skate culture, we are proud to announce that The Black Sheep are one of only two UK retailers stocking the adidas Aloha Super Wallenberg skate shoe. Dropping tomorrow, (November 2nd), this exclusive number will fly off the shelves so if you’re down, don’t hang about – go grab your adidas Aloha Super Wallenberg skate shoes right now.

Based on the super popular adidas silhouette first released as the Mark Gonzales Aloha Super last year, this adidas Aloha Super Wallenberg skate shoe updates that initial release with several nods to the context of Gonz’s paradigm-shifting ollie grab down Wallenberg’s big four back in 1991. The pink insoles and Scmoofoil logo on the tongue reference both the great man’s distinctive art work and the sun-drenched context to Gonz’s first big four conquest as seen in probably the greatest skate video every made – the masterful 1991 Blind ‘Video Days’. Similarly, the iconic black Three Stripe graphic on the lateral midfoot nods to the less than forgiving black asphalt that composes the floor at Wallenberg itself.
The overall shape of the Mark Gonzales adidas Aloha Super Wallenberg skate shoe also refers back to the adiStar fencing shoe, as memorably rocked by the man himself during his now infamous 1998 performance art piece in Mönchengladbach, Germany (see below).

We’re so hyped to be one of only two UK retailers stocking this homage to skateboarding’s greatest that we figured it was a good enough excuse to remind you all of a few bits of Wallenberg history as well.
If you peep the video embedded at the top of this page, you’ll see a fairly comprehensive overview of some of the most note worthy bangers to have gone down since Gonz first ollie grabbed the big four nearly 30 years ago. Everyone will have their own favourites no doubt but, as with most things in skate history, it all started with Mark Gonzales.

For those of you who might not have seen Gonz’s ‘Video Days’ section – dive in now and fill your eyeballs with 30 year old time traveling. This video part changed skateboarding forever.
(The Wallenberg ollie grab is at 2:32).

We’d be slipping if we didn’t also include Thrasher Magazine‘s Back to the Berg (2009) event video here too.
This one followed up their original 2004 Wallenberg event and served as a reminder to people of just how fucking crazy Wallenberg’s big four is. With Phelps in charge, this school-sanctioned carcass tossing frenzy cemented itself in skate history, with NBDs dropping like hammers from a greasy tool box.

Since then, the big four at Raoul Wallenberg Traditional High School in SF still hold their position as one of skateboard culture’s most recognisable spots and is still regularly hit up nearly 30 years since Gonz set the bar.

If the geeks among you crave more stats on this asphalt behemoth, Jenkem Mag put together a funny interview with the big four here, along with measuring Wallenberg so you don’t have to.

One final thing absolutely worth mentioning here is that the Raoul Wallenberg high school in SF, the one you know about because of skateboarding culture, is actually named after a real person. Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish architect and businessman who is credited globally for personally saving tens of thousands of Jewish people from death during WWII. His story is incredible – read more here: Raoul Wallenberg

Krooked Skateboards Mermaid video – Bobby Worrest alert!

Saturday, August 10th, 2019

If there’s one thing that DLXSF’s Gonz led brand Krooked skateboards can be relied on to produce, it’s banging video content. With a long back catalogue of releases including the only-on-VHS 2007 classic ‘Gnar Gnar‘, (which predated the current vogue for low-fi VHS skate videos by at least a couple of years) and skateboarding’s only ever 3-D video ‘Krook3d‘ to name just two – Krooked’s unique take on skateboarding has seen them quietly but solidly dominate the over-saturated skateboard airwaves since their inception.
Their latest straight-to-web piece – Krooked Skateboards Mermaid video serves up 10 minutes of new footage of most of the squad, (the originator and skateboarding’s own gaffer Mark Gonzales is sadly absent from this one) with a grip of footage from Brad Cromer, Matt Gottwig, Simon Jensen, Eddie Cernicky, Ronnie Sandoval, Felipe Bartolome and Mike Anderson, plus a 3 minute ender of a Bobby Worrest section and a fair few cameos including none other than Ray Barbee, (who’s rumoured to be riding for Krooked in some capacity after parting ways with Element recently).

As with everything Krooked put out – Mermaid is a cornucopia of skateboarding with everything from ditches, Ronnie Sandoval backyard DIY tranny carnage, and lines at what’s left of the infamous Justin Herman Plaza in SF (AKA ‘EMB‘) getting a shoeing from the Krooked warriors. Add to that a warm and enjoyable vibe, a banger of a soundtrack (who knew that the Tom Tom Club or HUM’s ‘You’d prefer an Astronaut’ would go so well with skating?) and a brace of Brad Cromer majesty and you’re basically laughing.
Put your phone down for a second, boy off the slow mo/trap music late flip clips and enjoy some realness.

Krooked Skateboards Mermaid video - Bobby Worrest alert!

As we’ve mentioned our appreciation for Krooked Skateboard’s previous video output it seems churlish not to throw a classic in here too, just so you can continue to bask in the Gonz-iverse following watching Krooked Skateboards Mermaid video. Scroll below and remind yourself of just how far ahead of the curve Gonz was with Gnar Gnar – long before Palace skateboards repopularised the VHS aesthetic, (and by doing so launched a million Instagram copycats), Krooked were releasing full-length VHS videos complete with obscure (ish) tracks by New Order and The Smiths. Damn well makes you think eh?

If you’re still keen for more from Krooked Skateboards – take your fingers for a wander around our extensive Krooked range, including everything from adidas Skateboarding X Krooked collabo merch, to Krooked decks, Krooked soft goods, cruiser wheels and of course, the classic Krooked Zip Zingers.
Now go learn eggplants.

Take yourself back to 1998 when Mark Gonzales did something only he could get away with. The Gonz hit up Germany’s Städtisches Museum to put on a performance he titled “Back Worlds Of Words”. Basically he skated a bunch of custom made obstacles in the gallery. We talk a lot about skating as a form of art but this gave that a whole new meaning. Oh yeah and he did the whole thing dressed in a white fencing suit with the word ‘ALOHA’ printed on the back. He also skated a pair of adiStar Fencing shoes…

But, its 20 years on from “Back Worlds Of Words” and Adidas wanted to commemorate the 20th Anniversary by hitting up the man himself and celebrate by doing it all over again. Not only this but Adidas will be debuting the Gonz’s new signature shoe: the Aloha Super. Both the video and the shoes will be released at midnight Saturday 18th August.

The Aloha Super is made in likeness of the original adiStar the Gonz wore back in 1998 but this time around built for skateboarding. We are happy to be releasing the Aloha Super on our website Saturday! So if you’re keen get them before they’re all gone.

The fourth part of the Adidas X Thrasher Magazine series,’Far And Away’ is now online for us to enjoy and build up more hype for the imminent premiere of Away Days. This fourth installment is more like a shortened slam section, with an insight into what it has taken to get those tricks for the full video. Filming for a video as big as this can push the best skateboarders in the world to their mental and physical breaking point. It’s not all doom and gloom in this edit though, highlights include Busenitz skating some bamboo and some street bangers that are fitted in to under four minutes of footage. Away Days is going to be deep!

Life’s A Beach Clothing

Tuesday, March 31st, 2015

lifes-a-beach-greg-larke-interview-0

Yes that’s right, one of the most missed companies of the 1980’s, Life’s A Beach is back and we here at the Black sheep are happy to say that we will be stocking products from this iconic brand!

It was started back in the early 80’s by Jeff Theodosakis and brothers Mark and Brian Simo. Jeff worked in the restaurant business and the brothers were tree surgeons.

They were based in Chicago and all three were motocross riders who traveled the circuit and this took them to Florida a few months each year. Even though they were ranking competitors they never really made any money from the sport, ” We were basically bums” Theodosakis says.  During their chill time in Florida they would hit up the beach, where they were horribly offended by men’s ball-strangling swim wear styles and felt like they needed to create a fashion alternative.

They decided to make knee length baggy shorts out of tablecloths and curtains! The shorts were met with a warm reception and the three started to sell them on the motocross circuit. They had little success at first in some of the Florida store until a Fort Lauderdale shop started selling them during spring break. That was it, they sold their bikes and bought sewing machines and built the business from Chicago until 1985 when the relocated to Carlsbad, California.

They then found themselves in the thick of the world as what we now know as extreme sports: motocross, surfing and skating etc. They made unique and wild styles which Life’s A Beach was especially geared towards expressing the pursuits of these sports. To show their own support they sponsored a number of top riders ( Now legends!) in each field, these included championship MX rider Rick Johnson, professional surfer Sunny Garcia, BMXer Brian Blyther and top skateboarders Mark Gonzales, Bill Danforth, Ron Allen, Dave Crabb, Jamie Mosberg and Mike Vallely. In 1988, Life’s A Beach introduced a sub-division deck brand under the name B.C.C, which stood for Bad Boy Club!

Now after a twenty one year absence Life’s A Beach is back, in part largely to Greg Finch with the help of Melvyn De Villiers and Fergus Purcell who have brought this well recognizable company back to life!
