November round up: Mark Suciu, FA, Andrew Allen and more

Saturday, November 27th, 2021

Goddamn. November has been a heavy month for video drops. First up, the ever productive Mark Suciu with yet another part, this time for Spitfire wheels.
Internet gossip regarding his (possible) thirst for that elusive SOTY trophy aside, this is textbook Mark Suciu. Insanely difficult ledge, hubba and manual tricks thrown together in long, flowing lines and performed with consummate ease.
The Blubba tricks alone will make this one a much rewound clip for sure. Will it be enough to get past Thrasher’s post-Phelps SOTY panel? Who knows, either way Mark Suciu must be one of the most prolific pro skaters in history at this point.

Next up, Vans very own portly bank manager. Andrew Allen footage never disappoints and this Pixies scored 5 minutes does exactly what you’re hoping for. Watch it, go buy a bowling shirt and some Vans Eras and then skate those near-vertical banks that you usually avoid.

November round up: Mark Suciu, FA, Andrew Allen and more

Tangentially connected to the above through AA riding for Hockey, Fucking Awesome’s sister co, is the latest video release from Dill’s FA vehicle.
Clocking in at a frankly unnecessary 14 minutes, ‘420 E. 9th Street’ is far from FA’s greatest work. I love Louie Lopez as much as the next guy but do I really want to sit through a few minutes of mediocre (by FA standards) LES footage to get to him? The good stuff in here is really good – Louie Lopez continues to blow minds, newer heads Diego Todd, Joe Campos and Nik Stain come through with the goods and Ben Kadow does some ironic high ollie stuff, so FA fans will probably dig it but I struggled to maintain interest if I’m honest.

In direct contrast to the lukewarm reception to the FA clip above is Dime’s latest clip. The explosively powered tech of Will Marshall rarely fails to hit the target for me and this high energy pop music scored banger is another winner. For such a pint-sized dude, Will Marshall has an insane amount of pop. Crazy ledge lines, huge bump to bars, getting tattoos in the middle of heaving night clubs: brilliant. Dime do it again.

Did you all catch this one? Jante – 10:34 a video filmed predominantly in Stockholm and featuring a bunch of Scandinavians you should already know (Gustav Tønnesen and Nisse Ingemarsson) plus a load of others who you’ll want to know more of after watching this. With truly outstanding camera work and follow filming – Jante showcases some of the most gifted skaters on the planet. And the spots? Rougher than a dog’s arse. Invest 10 minutes in this, it’s worth it.

Last but by no means least comes a new 10 minutes of fun from UK clothing crew Serious Adult. If the po-faced tone of that new FA clip got on your tits, watch this straight after for a palette cleanser. With a cast of Serious adult regulars plus Shaun Currie, Zeta Rush and Jeremy Jones – you can’t go wrong here. Peep their previous clips over at the Serious Adult You Tube.

Tiago, Suciu or Milton: Who’s your 2019 Thrasher Mag SOTY?

Tiago, Suciu or Milton: Who’s your 2019 Thrasher Mag SOTY?

Tiago, Suciu or Milton: Who's your 2019 Thrasher Mag SOTY?

It’s undeniable that in the world of skateboarding there is no higher accolade than the much coveted Thrasher Magazine SOTY trophy. Imbued with the literal blood of the much missed dude-with-the-glasses himself, since 1990 Thrasher have flexed their benign dictatorship and awarded one skateboarder above all others the title of SOTY in accordance with a recognition of their contributions to skateboarding during the 12 preceding months. Neither Jake Phelps nor Thrasher Magazine itself have ever made any secret of the fact that this is their award and that ultimately the winner is decided by them, regardless of what everyone else thinks. Equally, they’ve also always made it abundantly clear that one aspect of being in the running for SOTY is what each winner has done ‘for the mag’. Put another way, you could be hippy jumping over moving cars but if you’re not doing it for Thrasher then you’ve got no chance.

With the above in mind, hopefully you’ll forgive us for picking the three most worthy candidates from this year’s slightly confusing SOTY pick just to narrow the field down for you. I mean, democracy is all well and good in principle but there’s nothing like a focused choice…

First up, we have the man with hand grenades in his skate shoes (New Balance Numeric skate shoes as of last month to be precise) the one and only Tiago Lemos.
Initially dropped as a stand-alone single part on Thrasher for 24 hours, and then re-released as the curtains of Primitive Skateboarding‘s full-length Encore piece a few days later – Tiago brings the heat as always with 5 minutes of straight up skateboarding annihilation. You know a part is good when it follows a switch backside heelflip down Wallenberg and still manages to blow everything out of the water.
Put simply, this dude has the most explosive and mind bending POP in the history of skateboarding.
If you dig ledges, switch front feebles to switch heel out down handrails and the most legit switch mongo ever seen, then you need to vote for Tiago.
Extra points for all the nerds too by including a trick at the legendary Sadlands spot.

Up next is the twinkle-toed, high brow ledge poetry of Mr Mark Suciu – we’ve waxed lyrical about his Verso section previously so if you want more comment – check out this blog post.
If you’re more of a white wine and French poetry kind of skater then Mark’s probably your guy.
Here’s a reminder…

Last, but by no means least, if you prefer your skateboarding to err on the side of outright insanity and near-death-experiences then you have absolutely no option but to cast your vote for Creature Skateboards‘ own Argentine maniac Milton Martinez. If his “¡DEMOLICIÓN!”section doesn’t scare the shit out of you, then you need to lay off the Xanax. Pure, unbridled, skate and destroy ethos in human form.
An entire video section of enders without a hint of hyperbole. Fucking nutter!

Tiago, Suciu or Milton: Who’s your 2019 Thrasher Mag SOTY?

Mark Suciu’s Verso section

Thursday, October 3rd, 2019

Well, it’s nearly three months late, has generated 38 pages of Slap message board faux outrage, and holds the somewhat 2019-as-fuck honour of being the only online video section in history to have its own meta-narrative published months before it came out – but, Mark Suciu’s Verso section is finally here and fucking hell it’s amazing.
Initially premiered as a work-in-progress back in July at his long-time shop sponsor Atlas Skateboarding’s San Mateo store, since the first airing of Mark Suciu’s Verso part, expectation and anticipation levels for this have been higher than for pretty much any other online video release in recent history, (although by ‘recent’ remember that’s it’s 2019 so that basically means six months max).

Would this video mark a true return to the rapid foot mathematics and out-of-the-box thinking that first enamoured the entire skateboard universe to this mild mannered young man? Would Verso represent a complete return to form of one of modern skateboarding’s greatest thinkers, following the long recovery from a burst appendix back in 2014 that left him emaciated and facing the prospect of relearning to skate? Would it top his adidas Away Days part that, at least according to him, was filmed during his convalescence? Or had he Pat Duffy’d himself by dropping so much paradigm-shifting footage so early in his career that he’d be forever playing catch up with his earlier output? (See below for a reminder of a few of those).

Happily, it’s absolutely indisputable that with Thrasher Magazine’s drop of this latest piece of Suciu wizardry, his status as one of skateboarding’s most forward-thinking pros is more than assured.
We don’t intend to give any spoilers here as this banger needs careful digestion in its own time but, suffice to say, if you thought he would struggle to top his Sabotage 4 or Cross Continental parts then you, like the rest of the Internet, were tripping.

When the second trick in your latest section is a switch backside nosebluntslide fakie flip out back to switch (or fakie – fuck me this is confusing) – then you’re basically chilling as far as your status within skateboarding’s highest strata of next level innovation is concerned.

We’re not going to list any other stand outs – just go watch it, although it does bear saying that Mark Suciu’s Verso section begins with a lovely tribute to Ben Raemers, which is even more reason to love this dude.
Whilst the moniker of ‘skateboarding’s premier intellectual‘ that’s been foisted upon him purely due to the guy not being an idiot can be a little wearisome at times, Mark’s skateboarding really does speak of his passionate desire not to repeat himself, nor to limit his selection of spots to the obvious, and most importantly, to push the boundaries of the possible whilst remaining 100% true to a very specific and personal skateboard aesthetic. In short – if 2019’s relentless tirade of meaningless Instagram enabled cock measuring has led you to begin to question whether or not modern skateboarding is actually bollocks, this will convince you otherwise. Bravo big lad.

Now, with that said – we recommend that you check out The Bunt Live’s Mark Suciu interview here for more stories and a less self-consciously high brow representation of the man in question, then check out his 15 stair switch 5050 at the recent Dime event in Montreal here.

When you’ve done that – why not head over to our webstore and pick yourself up a pair of his adidas ADVII bangers as well, seeing as we just so happen to have them on sale right now?
Mark Suciu's Verso section - well worth the wait

Atlantic Drift – Episode 4

Tuesday, July 18th, 2017

If you have seen anything else by Jacob Harris or any of the previous Atlantic Drift episodes you probably already know whats in store. The finest visual treat is the latest in the Atlantic Drift series, episode 4 this time filmed in New York. This one surpasses what has come before in what was already a high level of brilliance in the series’ earlier outings. Once again released in conjunction with Thrasher Magazine, featuring the combined abilities of Mike Arnold, Casper Brooker, Tom Knox, Mark Suciu, Kevin Coakley and more, alongside the standard high definition filming, there isn’t really any edits that can compare. The final installment of this really enjoyable web series is nothing short of amazing, Harris has the eye for the perfect shot, and this does not disappoint.
