Portions with Charlie Birch, Lucien Clarke, Kyle Wilson and more

Saturday, March 6th, 2021

Straight up banger right here: Portions with Charlie Birch, Lucien Clarke, Kyle Wilson alongside a smattering of the UK’s best. London-based filmer and Palace contributor Austin Bristow has delivered!
This is no weak sauce mini clip – this is 21 minutes of some of best London skating yet.
Filmed over the last year (featuring many London tourist zones looking 28 Days Later), this has to be one of the best indy releases ever.
When you factor in a list of heads including Charlie Birch, Lucien Clarke, Kyle Wilson, Danny Brady, Chico and our own Nick Stansfield – you know it’s serious.
Aside from the very heavy Palace skateboards presence, you also get all manner of London-based rippers both established and new. The music is varied and unexpected in parts (A-HA you say?) and there are a ton of well known London spots getting crushed.
For a video like this to drop straight out of nowhere really is a testament to how fucking on it our national skate scene is right now.
Massive big ups to Austin ‘the silent giant’ Bristow and to all those involved in this one.
Absolutely incredible.

Portions with Charlie Birch, Lucien Clarke, Kyle Wilson

Given that recent Palace skateboards recruits Kyle Wilson and Charlie Birch bookend this 21 minute beast, I think it’s safe to say that we’ll be looking at pro boards for both of them in the very near future.
Both more than deserved too – natural talent, graft and solid human beings: what more do you want?

If this one’s given you a thirst for more London-centric ripping from the mind (and lens) of Austin Bristow, why not make yourself remember stuff via a reup of his 2016/17 Regulate series for Jenkem?
Episode 1 is below.

If you’re looking for a more recent Austin Bristow release – check out the Birdman Jr. II focusing on Sam Sitayeb with appearances from Kyle Wilson and Heitor Da Silva.

Landscape skateboards Seasons video – goodbye Landscape

Landscape skateboards Seasons video - goodbye Landscape landscape-seasons

With this week’s release of the latest Landscape skateboards Seasons video over on the Vague Mag site, came the sad news that this UK mainstay brand would be closing its doors for good.
Originally emerging from the ashes of the short-lived Fos brand Organic Skateboards that preceded it (see below for their only video release as Organic from the masterful ‘First Broadcast), Landscape Skateboards was officially announced back in 2003 with the release of their first full-length VHS ‘Portraits’.
Filmed and edited by the much missed Chris Massey, Portraits is rightly hailed as a UK classic. Featuring the original Landscape team of Olly Todd, Joel Curtis, Daniel ‘Snowy’ Kinloch and Toby Shuall, Massey’s premier Landscape release set the tone of the brand from the outset with a firm adherence to the ‘less is more’ principle and a focus on gimmick-free, stylish street skating.

Over the years since its foundation, many things changed at Landscape skateboards – team riders left, new riders joined and two other full length videos were released (see below), along with numerous tour clips and mag articles but the central philosophy behind Landscape always remained the same.

More recently, Landscape earned itself the moniker of ‘Mancscape’ due to the heavy preponderance of Mancunian based riders, including our very own Black Sheep family member Nick Stansfield and the one-man media enterprise that is Joe Gavin, to name just a few. This local connection adds even more poignancy to the news that Landscape is to join the many other now defunct UK brands in purgatory but its legacy will live on. And what better way to say goodbye than with a banger like this one?

Featuring parts from all the current team riders and a lovely dedication to Chris Barrett at the end (along with Chris Massey and Ben Raemers) – Joe Gavin and the boys have done themselves proud here and left the building on a highnote, or to quote the venerable Slap Forum – “They’ve taken the Heath exit…”

Fans of the brand who are keen to get their hands on some Landscape wood for the wall whilst they still can should direct themselves over to our webstore and pick up a Nick Stansfield pro deck, or even better, one of Landscape’s special Chris Barrett memorial boards which we still have in stock.
Don’t sleep though because when they’re gone, they’re gone and there will be no more restocks for obvious reasons.

We’re sad to see such a strong voice of the UK skateboard scene disappear but such is the nature of the over-saturated skateboard brand market these days. Any of you with an interest in UK skate brand history are advised to have a look at this heritage article cataloguing some of the other UK brands that have left the building over the last ten years or so.

Goodbye Landscape – you will be missed.
Now, why not treat your eyes to some archive Lanners video below, before you go drop some nuggets and pick yourselves up a piece of UK skate history?

Black Sheep – Volcom Spring ’16

Wednesday, March 30th, 2016

It’s officially Spring, the clocks have been put forward an hour, the weather is picking up, flowers are starting to bloom but most importantly the Volcom Spring 16 collection is available from us here at The Black Sheep Store. The stylish collection is on point as ever with Volcom, and you know that there is guaranteed high class quality. Consisting of some classy hoodies, tasteful jackets and the nifty Don Pendleton Stone Pocket designed tee (scan below for more,) the collection does not disappoint.

What better way to celebrate the release than to send shop rider, worker, lurker and UK Volcom representative Nick ‘Stannerz’ Stansfield out round the streets of Manchester to bring us a short but sweet edit. Filmed all in one day in locations across the city like Urbis, Riverside, Salford and of course The Black sheep! Nick comes through with the goods and even earns himself a pint at one of the local boozers. Massive thanks to Isaac Wilkinson for filming and of course our man Stannerz for smashing it!

‘Escapes’ by Landscape Skateboards

Wednesday, December 30th, 2015

LANDSCAPE SKATEBOARDS – ESCAPES from Landscape Skateboards on Vimeo.

During the festive holidays we saw Landscape Skateboards release their newest edit ‘Escapes’. Filmed in various locations throughout Europe such as London, Paris, Portugal, Barcelona, Sheffield and Manchester it is nothing but spectacular. Just what was needed on Boxing day when lounging around after the amount of booze/food consumed the previous day. A lovely unexpected surprise, especially because our very own team rider Nick ‘Stannerz’ Stansfield closes the show with some lovely stunts. Not only was it Stannerz who smashed it but also Ash Hall, Snowy, Keanu Robson, Joe Gavin and Jethro Coldwell were nothing but mind blowing. Landscape need to produce more edits as this one was on fire. Maybe because it was filmed and edited by Sean Lomax who is killing it in the film making game. The promo is dedicated to Chris Massey who sadly passed away recently, without him Landscape wouldn’t be the same, so sit back, raise a glass for Massey and enjoy. For those that don’t know who Massey was, he iss the legend who made Portraits, Landscape’s first ever video that is still powerful to this day! RIP MASSEY!

Rob-Smith-tail-drop-ride-channel-open-edit-black-sheep

For nearly a year now the Ride Channel have been posting a series of edits up on their site called the ‘Open’ edits. These clips are from shops not just in the USA but from all around the world. The idea was to show the independent shops that support skateboarding in their community and also the riders and staff that make these shops the backbone of the skateboard scene, and yes you guessed it, it was our turn for the Ride Channel Open edit ! Thanks to the camera and editing skills of Mr Phil Harvey, he has treated us to nearly four minutes of Black Sheep action! Jiri Bulin kicks things off with some raw street hammers before Lewis Threadgold shows us how to properly do a load of wallie and wall ride variations! Josh Bentley mixes old spots with new, a sick line at Manchester’s newest DIY spot and a huck down the infamous grizzly stairs. Stu Reynolds after that proves that 40 is the new 20, then Lucien Costello shows us the talents of Manchester youth on the rise! Seb Batty makes light work of one of the highest ledges in town! Nick Stannerz and Sexual Stu keep the mosh alive with a quick line each on urbis.  Rikk Fields throws some of his footage in from his recent exploits in Hong Kong while Jake Potts keeps it local with an added Barcelona banger! Badman Barrett gets tech at Stockport’s finest ledge haven, then there’s strictly business as Reiss Johnson and Andy Scott take it to the vert! Harry Lintell comes through with even more mesmerizing street antics before Eddie Belvedere takes on some Cornish concrete! Rob Smith ends the show in fine fashion, gnarly drop ins, street lines and flying high at Stockwell! Big thanks to Phil Harvey for putting it together, Rybo, Armani Rochford and Isaac Wilkinson for additional filming. Big shout out to MC DRS for providing the soundtrack and also to the Ride Channel for having us on! So what you waiting for click play now!

Madchester Mondays by Joe Gavin

Friday, August 28th, 2015

bez

The scene in Manchester has always been on point. Some of the UK’s most productive skaters can be seen dropping edits all year round in this gritty grey city. Avoiding the rain, Manchester has got to be well up there in one of the best UK cities. Due to this Joe Gavin and the many Manchester shredders have linked up with Sidewalk Magazine bringing you a series of edits dropping every other Monday called Madchester Mondays. Filmed and Edited by Joe Gavin using one of the skateboarders favorite tool, the VX. Capturing some of the dudes that represent Manchester every day. Some of The Black Sheep’s family such as Harry Lintell, Nick ‘Stannerz’ Stansfield can be seen in each episode as well as the likes of Neil Worthington, Kev Eley, Ben Grove, Joe Gummo, Keanu Robson, Pablo Aresu, Dom Henry, Gary Woodward, Joe himself and many more. Taken from Madchester, the British music scene that Manchester created in the 80’s and 90’s thanks to The Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Joy Division, The Charlatans and plenty of other influential bands. You can expect to see all things Northern.Huge respect for Joe and stepping up to the mark and taking charge showing the world what the Manchester scene has to offer. The vision amazing, concept even better, these episodes are certainly worth keeping an eye out for. The Black Sheep are a huge fan of Manchester and the level of skating seen here so these edits hit the nail on the head for us. There has already been 4 banging episodes. Have a look below at one including Landscapes trip to Portugal to see what we’re talking about…
