Vans Shop Riot UK 2019 – Graystones Action Sports Manchester
This has been said many times previously but it absolutely deserves reiterating: Vans Shop Riot is hands down the best event in the UK skateboard calendar. There is a lot of talk from a lot of brands about the cultural value and necessity of supporting core skate stores but there is only one brand who actually put their money where their mouth is and that brand is Vans.
We can argue all day about the relative ‘legitness’ of the myriad skate shoe brands in our universe if you like and, judging on Instagram battling, people love to, but one, simple, undeniable fact remains.
Only Vans are prepared to put their hands in their pockets and back up the rhetoric year after year with an event that brings the sadly dwindling number of UK skateboard shops together to create a space for localism to be celebrated, skaters both known and unknown to shine and, more importantly, still manage to keep things 100% skate in the process.

For those of you not clued up as to what Vans Shop Riot is, here’s a very brief summary.
Vans invite skate stores from across our country (and our European counterparts) to come together for a shop team event every year. The idea is simple: without skate stores, skateboarding culture is screwed, so why not create an event that allows all the major stores responsible for nourishing their local skate communities to gravitate towards one place for a weekend? Vans fork out for hotels, food, booze and the venue and the crews come to rip purely based on the love and respect that they have for the skate shops that support them. In the simplest terms – it’s on some Robin Hood shit. You get me?

If my slowly disintegrating memory is correct, the recent Vans UK Shop Riot 2019 Graystone Action Sports Manchester event marked the 11th anniversary of Van’s commitment to celebrating the lifeblood of our skateboard scene and what a weekend it was. Vans UK masterminds Olly Wright, Manhead, Matt Lloyd, Amanda Destroyed Brains, Ralph Knackered Hip and various others held the reigns and curated a banger of a weekend.
Free booze from Northern Monk (who doesn’t love their 2% IPA?), free BBQ chomp, Blast skates pinatas, a warm up sesh at the Pump Cage and a Saturday at Graystone watching the best humans from the best shops in the country go in – I mean, you’d have to be an utter bellend not to enjoy that, wouldn’t you?

The answer to that question is a resounding ‘yes’ just in case you were wondering.
As defending champions, the Black Sheep Family came out swinging, qualifying in first coming into the semi finals but you know us, as the Kersal Massive said “we dont fuck about”. With that said, when the final was finally finalised, nobody was going to argue with Flatspot’s position as Vans Shop Riot 2019 winners – the Devon cream tea heads went in – fair play.

I could ramble on all day about this but really, you might as well just watch the excellent Ryan Gray crafted video at the top of this guff and decide for yourself.
As a completist of the highest order, I’d be remiss if I didn’t give you the full list of attendees as you’re very probably not going to see them anywhere else so…
If we work on the proviso that the eventual winners were in reverse order:
1st Flatspot
2nd Black Sheep
3rd Slick Willies
4th Lost Art
4th 5050

That then means that the full results are as follows (according to the score sheets).
6th The House
6th Freestyle
8th Sessions
9th Forty Two
10th Skate Warehouse
11th TR7
12th Kultivation
13th Flavour
14th Big Wooodys
15th Lariatt
16th Ideal
17th Welcome
18th Decimal
19th Exist
20th Brixton’s Baddest
21st Cardiff Skate Club

So there you have it. Absolute banger of a weekend for all involved. Never ending big ups to all the Vans heads for making this happen year after year. Even heavier big ups to all the shop crews that came and repped hard for the love and a special donation of knucks to our very own Rikk Fields who managed to break his ankle in the finals, carry on skating till the final whistle and then still drink a brace of booze before returning to grafter land.

If you want more, head over to the Vague Mag site for a full photo overview by skateboarding’s own Man Mountain Marko, the very venerable Leo Sharp and the equally venerable Rafski.

And then, seeing as how we didn’t win this year, scroll down and drink deeply from our victory in 2018.
We’ll be back in 2020 and this time we’re going to DESTROY you.

Rikk Fields New Witchcraft Part

Thursday, February 25th, 2016

Now this is what I’m talking about! Our shop rider Rikk Fields has just released a part for Witchcraft Hardware and it’s a bloody cracker. Proper skateboarding at its finest, good on you Rikk lad, stoked! Contains everything you need to get hyped from gnarly street stunts, handrails, some ledge trickery and even some transition. For some reason I always seem to associate Rikk with mainly transition skating although with this part it seems to be more street than anything. Anyway lets be honest, he can do it all. An all around ripper, pie eater, ale drinker, this section is power. It also couldn’t have come out at a better time as we have just had a restock on Witchcraft Hardware product. So do consider these guys when purchasing your next board. Hit the link to see what’s available… http://www.blacksheepstore.co.uk/witchcraft-skateboards.html

Keep up with Rikk Fields and Witchcraft on the old Instagram to make sure you never miss a moment of madness.

For nearly a year now the Ride Channel have been posting a series of edits up on their site called the ‘Open’ edits. These clips are from shops not just in the USA but from all around the world. The idea was to show the independent shops that support skateboarding in their community and also the riders and staff that make these shops the backbone of the skateboard scene, and yes you guessed it, it was our turn for the Ride Channel Open edit ! Thanks to the camera and editing skills of Mr Phil Harvey, he has treated us to nearly four minutes of Black Sheep action! Jiri Bulin kicks things off with some raw street hammers before Lewis Threadgold shows us how to properly do a load of wallie and wall ride variations! Josh Bentley mixes old spots with new, a sick line at Manchester’s newest DIY spot and a huck down the infamous grizzly stairs. Stu Reynolds after that proves that 40 is the new 20, then Lucien Costello shows us the talents of Manchester youth on the rise! Seb Batty makes light work of one of the highest ledges in town! Nick Stannerz and Sexual Stu keep the mosh alive with a quick line each on urbis.  Rikk Fields throws some of his footage in from his recent exploits in Hong Kong while Jake Potts keeps it local with an added Barcelona banger! Badman Barrett gets tech at Stockport’s finest ledge haven, then there’s strictly business as Reiss Johnson and Andy Scott take it to the vert! Harry Lintell comes through with even more mesmerizing street antics before Eddie Belvedere takes on some Cornish concrete! Rob Smith ends the show in fine fashion, gnarly drop ins, street lines and flying high at Stockwell! Big thanks to Phil Harvey for putting it together, Rybo, Armani Rochford and Isaac Wilkinson for additional filming. Big shout out to MC DRS for providing the soundtrack and also to the Ride Channel for having us on! So what you waiting for click play now!

Seb_Baty_Gun

First of all, from all of us here at The Black Sheep we want to wish our team rider Mr Seb Batty a  happy 21st birthday! All the best pal!

To celebrate Seb’s birthday we have a brand new web edit that he’s been putting together over the past few months. I say putting together, Seb is one of those skaters you can take to pretty much any spot and will be able to get something on film, this lad stacks clips for fun! You can normally find Seb  filming out on the streets, shredding the cage or chilling in his red Toyota Yaris! He’s already lived in numerous places around the world like Australia, Hong Kong and Wigan! Which have some of the best skate spots imaginable! Whilst were on the subject of Hong Kong, Seb and fellow Sheep riders Rikk Fields and Jiri Bulin are heading over there on a skate mission this week, Sebs planning to stay a little longer than the others but expect more footage and photos from these three in the weeks to come! Wish him a happy birthday yourself by clicking the play button below! Special thanks goes out to Dwindle Distribution Uk for the Enjoi flow he receives.

Black Sheep Store Presents Rikk Fields ‘Too Right’ Section

Monday, June 2nd, 2014

Rick Fields is a man on a mission at the moment!

If you didn’t manage to see Witchcraft Hardware’s Rikk’s  section when Sidewalk Magazine released it in connection to his first light in issue 208 then you now have another opportunity to watch it. Rikk has been smashing it for years. I remember skating with him when we were younger at the infamous Bolton Bones skatepark where he learnt much of his trade! After seemingly disappearing from the skateboard world for a little while, exploring the misadventures of the Wigan music and party scene he’s been back and killing it harder than ever! Even in his period of absence, he could still be spotted around Wigan, grabbing other peoples boards and still being able to produce some of the maddest stuff on a board I’ve seen!  Hit the play button above to see Wigan’s top ‘dogger’ skating a huge variety of our not so perfect Northwestern terrain. Handrails, ledges and cobbled quarters, Rikk Fields can do it all, with a style and aggression that only he can deliver! More sections dropping this week too so keep yours eyes on the prize and don’t miss out on the Black Sheeps ‘Too Right’ video dropping section by section!
