Graystone Skatepark Manchester – Black Sheep Family

One recent mid winter evening we where cordially invited to go check out the newest indoor skate park for Manchester. Graystone Action Sports Academy Manchester is somewhat different to the dark, dingy skate-parks we’ve all grown up with. Instead your welcomed with cleanliness, good lighting, one seriously impressive layout by the FourOneFour park builders and to top it all off you can enjoy some chef made food and (for the non-drivers) partake in an arrange of beverages.

We’ve been told there’s more to come from this Manchester based facility to add to the trampoline, snowboard foam pit jump and general craziness of the place. Expect a sprung floor insulation, ninja climbing centre, on site yoga classes and much, much more. At this point let me just state the square footage of the place still remains around 80% pure heavenly Russian birch skate-park paradise.

Huge thanks for the invite and session. Get your viewing pleasure on below and see the fruits of labour from that recent winter evening session. As you may be aware the #BlackSheepFamily go off at any given opportunity so it’s no surprise they bagged a minute and half’s worth of footage with more to spare.

Featuring Black Sheep Store team riders Harry Lintell, Seb Batty, Lucien Costello, Sam Mason and the latest young-gun recruit and all around terrain killer Leo James. All filmed in just a two hour session followed by beer, bants and fat cut chips for afters. Thanks again to Graystone Action Sports Academy for the hook up.

Props to Lewis Royden and Will Berry from Amfas Skateboards for the filming & editing duties.

Go follow Graystone Action Sports Academy Instagram for more details on opening hours, session times, prices and more.

Ricky Davidson – Winter In The City Avenue Skateboards

If you’ve ever frequented the Pump Cage skate park you may of come across the unassuming friendly Australian that is Ricky Davidson. Seriously one of the nicest Manchester’s skate scene import since Jiri Bulin. Plus along with being super grounded and all round good dude Ricky as you may of witnessed has some serious talent on a skateboard! His style to me is a like a Jason Adams, Wade Speyers modern street skating mix. And with those sort of credentials he’s one of the best up and comer in Manchester right now.

Cast your mind back to 2016 when Ricky stomped all over many a Manchester skate spots with his debut ‘Ender’ and ‘Official Welcome’ section for #01FUCKIN61

The above ridiculous part ended up premiering via Transworld Skateboard Magazine. Not a bad entry to the minds of skateboarders Worldwide eh…

Enough of my ramblings as this blog should be about Ricky’s first official video outing for Manchester based Avenue Skateboards. Obvious shout outs to Vague Skate Magazine for putting this out to the Worldwide web. Also if like Ricky you like beer hit the link??? Random, yes but Black Sheep’s own Ricky Davidson graces the Northern Monk beer collaboration with Vague Skate Mag latest joint outing. Beer can photography by straight up grafter and good guy Reece Leung that graces the latest loral hops 5.7% lager.

Vans Park Series Malmo 2017

vans-park-series-malmo-sweden-2017

So the casual question was put out to us at the Black Sheep Family, “Do you fancy going to the Vans Park Series in Malmo Sweden this year…?” so of course it took all of a split second to respond and the next thing we know flight reservations where emailed followed by a loose schedule for our time in sunny Sweden (*please note we got very, very lucky with the Swedish weather as normally it’s pretty much like Manchester just with colder winters!)

The dates where set for the 2017 Vans Park Series in Malmo Sweden and the next thing you know we where coming into land via Copenhagen with a short trip over the infamous Øresund Bridge (go watch the Swedish TV series ‘The Bridge’ if you haven’t already!) For those planning a skate mission to Sweden via the U.K you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know your literally 20 minutes train journey away from the airport to some of Malmo’s finest street spots and ridiculously amazing concrete skate parks.  So of course the first port of call stepping of the train we headed straight down to the Vans park located in Kroksback which is slightly out of the main city center of Malmo. The first sight of the park seriously leaves you questioning yourself, we’ve all seen footage/photos/instagram from the park but to see it in the flesh gives you a whole lot more admiration for any skater stepping up to ride the luscious concrete waves it has to offer.

Of course it was like the who’s who from the skateboard world looking around the deck with skaters literally from all over the World in attendance. And of course Black Sheep Family lifer Andy Scott is now currently classed as a local with his recent move East so it was an added treat to catch up with old ‘In a minute Mr Scott!’

The first day down at Hyllie Kroksback skate-park was a little teaser on how this competition may go over the following two days,  you could see a load of the Pro’s and Am’s just getting used to the place but slowly finding the groove as runs got longer and more technical in the process. Again I was still blown away of how gnarly the park is especially after rushing in for a quick roll around and quickly becoming out of my depth whilst hurtling towards the deep end bowled out section. So it was back to the shade with some powerful coffee to warn off the days early start, then sit back and relax to watch the European’s first day qualifiers that soon escalated from the moments before mellow session!

Time was ticking and the first day skate was over with the talk of the town being a free Corona beer party down the local Street Lab skate shop in central Malmo where the good crew was due to celebrate their shop extension in the shape of a new Vans store in store. Rad to see the Lovenskate guys in attendance doing some one off board printing collaborating both the Vans logo and the locally recognized Street Lab branding.  Massive thanks to the crew in store for the warm welcome and even use of the WiFi to do the obligatory FaceTime call home.

Second day came round quick sharp after our first luxury night in the hotel (not trying to show off but we’re just not used to such surroundings!) and it was the five minute skate in the baking sunshine down towards the epic park and another eye opener walking in to see Ishod Wair casually destroying every piece of transition in his path. Seats where taken and it was time to sit back and watch the days silly skating unfold with some serious names now in attendance including Raven Tershey, Oskar Rozenberg Hallberg, Pedro Barros, Rune Glifberg, Sam Beckett, Alex Sorgente (last years overall Vans Park Series winner) plus many more global rippers.

After the initial day of qualifiers and general mental skating it was looking good for the following day semi’s and then monstrous finals on what was to be another scorching day of sunshine. You probably caught the live screening from the last day but go remind yourselves below with some official Vans Park Series footage capturing all the highlights from all of the above!

Silas Baxter-Neal’s “The Grotto Farewell” video

Thursday, August 18th, 2016

So this little beast of a park which has probably popped up onto your feed on many of occasions has sadly come to an end. They’ve had an epic run and this place has been graced with some of the best dudes in skateboarding. To give the park a good farewell a few of the local shredders took upon themselves to destroy every obstacle on offer. Enjoy the video because it may be the last time you see footage at this park. Features Silas, Brent Atchley, Tyler Bledsoe, Josh Matthews, Joey Pepper, Mike Chin and many more. The pyramid hip looks like so much fun and I would have loved to skate it, although I believe there isn’t any trick that Ryan Casado has done already.

Preston Skate Park Opening Jam

Thursday, September 17th, 2015

skatepark3-630x390

So last weekend saw the Preston Skate Park Opening Jam and lets just say the newly poured concrete was shredded until the unsuspected sun disappeared for the night. Expectations high, skaters descended from all over to give the Norths newest park a good seeing too. A heavy LBP presence working behind the scenes, local skate legend Frosty helping out, it was certain to be a good day.

Freestyle, one of the UK’s leading skate park construction companies took on the contract to build the park as part of the Moor Park restoration. Costing £320,000, it’s worth every penny. Not a ledge in sight, just strictly transition! Situated right across the road from Preston North End football stadium it’s easy to find/get too and it’s 100% worth a visit. So if you’re ever in the area go take a look for yourself, plus there’s free parking too so no excuses.

Welsh Alan, Back Smiths the deep end.

Since Preston is one of Manchester’s neighboring cities. It was inevitable that some of our family would make an appearance including The Black Sheep’s veteran Mr Eddie Belvedere. You also saw the likes of Josh ‘Man Head’ Young, Same Pulley, Frosty, Sam Mason, Rooney, Sox and many more slashing the fresh pool coping. Paul Graham behind the camera lens as seen above with Welsh Alan’s, Back Smith. Catch the whole gallery over on the Sidewalk Magazine site. As for the edit, you don’t need to look any further than below….

Big up to everyone involved for giving the North yet another amazing place for not only the kids to go shred but also us old dudes! Massive thanks to Bob Frost, chair of Preston Skate Park Projects for making it happen.

House Of Vans London – Black Sheep Family

Rikk Fields House Of Vans London

So a few months back now we we’re fortunate enough to get a call from the good folk at Vans and got asked if we wanted to head down and hang out with Geoff Rowley and basically have a session followed by pizza’s and beers. Obviously not ones to turn down such an opportunity a few of the Black Sheep Family members boosted down to the big smoke on the old Virgin Pendolino and proceeded to have a grand old time.

With Black Sheep Family staff member and in house filmer Phil Harvey in tow the riders seized the opportunity to bang out the edit your about to watch below. For those who’ve never ventured into the tunnels that makes up the House Of Vans London your in for a pretty magical treat, not only is there the concrete skate park spread over three rooms they also house a bespoke night club, one amazing restaurant, cinema plus a private luxury pad style chill room complete with leather sofas, big screens and mini bar. We’ve had a few visits now down to this little piece of London heaven and obviously always get a warm welcome from O.G Black Sheep team rider Rob Smith who heads up all the skate-park happenings along with getting involved on the music event side as well.

As ever, massive thanks to the good folks at Vans for the invite and good times. Always a pleasure to be working with a brand that backs skateboarding to the fullest.

Adidas Skateboarding-‘Boost The Bar’-London

Sunday, June 28th, 2015

So we we’re fortunate enough to get asked to attend the recent Adidas Skateboarding ‘Boost The Bar’ event along with the epic South Bank demo with pretty much the whole Global Adidas team in attendance.

Serious good times watching the Gonz, Busenitz, Benny Fairfax etc at the historical spot that is the South-bank under croft. Pretty much every inch of the old flag stones got utilized as the the team proceeded to tear it yet another new one. Obvious stand out’s was getting to witness Mark Gonzales just steady cruising but still killing it at a young age of 46, our whole journey down to the big smoke was pretty much focused on the legendary Gonz ‘Video Days’ section when he pretty much opened up Southbank to a whole new world of tricks.

If you’ve not already seen the official Sidewalk Magazine edit from the demo then get your click on here >> Adidas Skateboarding Southbank Demo <<

So after a chilled yet power amped session at Southbank everyone headed over to Mile End Skate Park by various means of transport. The next leg of the fun and frolics in London was the official ‘Boost The Bar’ shop event by Adidas Skateboarding UK. After initial torrential down pours the good old Southern climate came through good and blessed us with a semi dry concrete park including the new obstacle provided especially for the afternoons proceedings.

The actual ‘competition’ was pretty much a chilled session with friends and the Black Sheep Family went through to the final against the host shop Parlour. Even then the banter was high and it proceeded to be general good vibes all round.

Massive thanks to Adidas Skateboarding and our Southern host Parlour Skate Store for the hospitality. No need to tell you the specifics but the booze flowed well into the early hours which left us trailing home Northwards the following morning/night… Big ups to all involved!

Jiri Bulin ‘Captured In Cage’

Friday, May 23rd, 2014

Over the past few months Jiri and Isaac have steadily been gathering these clips for the newest edit from Jiri, captured in cage. In Jiri’s own words ‘I promise this will be my last Pump Cage edit!’ and to be fair he’s probably not got much left to do there after this one.
Filmed and edited by Isaac Wilkinson.
Big thanks to all at the Pump Cage.
