Nyjah Huston’s OMFG Part

Nyjah-Huston-OMFG

Now we know that Nyjah Huston’s OMFG part dropped online a few days ago but I thought it was well worth a re-share / blog piece. One of the most recognized skateboarders of this generation is clearly well on form. From that little dreadlocked kid back smithing handrails bigger than him at the X-games and early Element videos, to a young adult getting all the coverage, sponsors, internet clips, TV time and magazine covers. The Element pro divides opinion, love him, hate him, loath him, whichever side of the fence you sit on you cant help but take notice of this lad and the ability that he has on his board. He’s recently jumped ship, leaving DC and choosing to skate for the swoosh factor! Which means he wont be able to use any of his old footage in his old kicks, therefore dropping this rad part due to brand politics! As per usual Thrasher magazine had the privilege of premiering the part which probably caused some major internet traffic! With some jaw dropping combinations of technical street lines, taking tricks that would be difficult on a ledge but yet taking it down some of the biggest handrails, this part pretty much has it all! So no matter what you think, give the edit another watch and let Nyjah’s skating do the talking!

Sidewalk Magazine To Move Online

Wednesday, April 1st, 2015

sidewalk-magazine-top

So this week it was confirmed by Factory Media that Sidewalk magazine (Also along with Kingpin, Whitelines and various other titles) will exist no more in its printed form. A sad day for UK skateboarding, a sad day for skateboarding in general.  Nobody within skateboarding really wants to see a shop, a company or in this case a well respected magazine cease to exist. For the past twenty years Sidewalk magazine has informed and supported skateboarders.

It opened up the window into our amazing culture that is UK skateboarding. It was the highlight of the month, you waited for it to be dropped through your door by the postman, or you rushed to your local skate shop after school or work to get a copy. Wherever you were it kept us informed of what was happening, when it was happening, you knew where to go, when to go and in its own way kept the UK scene in sync with each other in all parts of the country.

Now that times have changed and technology advances, our appetite for media is moving more towards being instantly gratified, with the likes of Facebook, Instagram and twitter to name a few, anything and everything can put out there for the world to see in a matter of seconds.

With a constant stream of photos and video clips being published on the world wide web it seems hard to imagine a time when we needed to rely on the printed text that was in front of our eyes. Despite the great efforts of people like Ben Powell, Andy Horsley, Ryan Gray, Leo Sharpe and everyone else involved with Sidewalk, the inevitable had to happen.

For now, Sidewalk will continue to bring us all the great things they do solely on their website. The very last edition is out now so go and grab a copy,  as we say farewell to one of the most important parts of UK skateboarding that we have ever known.

RIP Sidewalk Surfer – you will be missed.

Life’s A Beach Clothing

Tuesday, March 31st, 2015

lifes-a-beach-greg-larke-interview-0

Yes that’s right, one of the most missed companies of the 1980’s, Life’s A Beach is back and we here at the Black sheep are happy to say that we will be stocking products from this iconic brand!

It was started back in the early 80’s by Jeff Theodosakis and brothers Mark and Brian Simo. Jeff worked in the restaurant business and the brothers were tree surgeons.

They were based in Chicago and all three were motocross riders who traveled the circuit and this took them to Florida a few months each year. Even though they were ranking competitors they never really made any money from the sport, ” We were basically bums” Theodosakis says.  During their chill time in Florida they would hit up the beach, where they were horribly offended by men’s ball-strangling swim wear styles and felt like they needed to create a fashion alternative.

They decided to make knee length baggy shorts out of tablecloths and curtains! The shorts were met with a warm reception and the three started to sell them on the motocross circuit. They had little success at first in some of the Florida store until a Fort Lauderdale shop started selling them during spring break. That was it, they sold their bikes and bought sewing machines and built the business from Chicago until 1985 when the relocated to Carlsbad, California.

They then found themselves in the thick of the world as what we now know as extreme sports: motocross, surfing and skating etc. They made unique and wild styles which Life’s A Beach was especially geared towards expressing the pursuits of these sports. To show their own support they sponsored a number of top riders ( Now legends!) in each field, these included championship MX rider Rick Johnson, professional surfer Sunny Garcia, BMXer Brian Blyther and top skateboarders Mark Gonzales, Bill Danforth, Ron Allen, Dave Crabb, Jamie Mosberg and Mike Vallely. In 1988, Life’s A Beach introduced a sub-division deck brand under the name B.C.C, which stood for Bad Boy Club!

Now after a twenty one year absence Life’s A Beach is back, in part largely to Greg Finch with the help of Melvyn De Villiers and Fergus Purcell who have brought this well recognizable company back to life!

Mighty Healthy X Gino Iannucci Collection

Monday, March 30th, 2015

MightyHealthy-GinoIannucci_01

A collaboration that has been long overdue has now happened. The people at Mighty Healthy present the Gino Iannucci collection, the capsule. Pieces in this collection are inspired by Gino’s unique fluid style and will be the hallmark for the brands tenth anniversary.

Now we know Gino is one of the more notoriously quieter professional skateboarders out there but he loudly made his arrival on the major skateboarding world with, as only he can, a precise and stylish backside heeflip down the infamous Gonz Gap at San Francisco’s landmark Embarcadero plaza. With the entire skateboarding world immediately taking note, Gino would cement his place in skateboard greatness with mind blowing schoolyard and downhill lines and numerous classic video parts. Gino’s style is unique, always fluid and never forced, even when he seems to land something sketchy it’s undeniably pulled off with absolute steez! Having been keeping a lower profile than most in recent times, every clip, part or photo of Gino is always a gem, he’s pretty much untouchable! We here at the Black Sheep are proud to be able to bring you some of the pieces from the collection ( Which can be viewed here!)
