Graystone Skatepark Manchester – Black Sheep Family

One recent mid winter evening we where cordially invited to go check out the newest indoor skate park for Manchester. Graystone Action Sports Academy Manchester is somewhat different to the dark, dingy skate-parks we’ve all grown up with. Instead your welcomed with cleanliness, good lighting, one seriously impressive layout by the FourOneFour park builders and to top it all off you can enjoy some chef made food and (for the non-drivers) partake in an arrange of beverages.

We’ve been told there’s more to come from this Manchester based facility to add to the trampoline, snowboard foam pit jump and general craziness of the place. Expect a sprung floor insulation, ninja climbing centre, on site yoga classes and much, much more. At this point let me just state the square footage of the place still remains around 80% pure heavenly Russian birch skate-park paradise.

Huge thanks for the invite and session. Get your viewing pleasure on below and see the fruits of labour from that recent winter evening session. As you may be aware the #BlackSheepFamily go off at any given opportunity so it’s no surprise they bagged a minute and half’s worth of footage with more to spare.

Featuring Black Sheep Store team riders Harry Lintell, Seb Batty, Lucien Costello, Sam Mason and the latest young-gun recruit and all around terrain killer Leo James. All filmed in just a two hour session followed by beer, bants and fat cut chips for afters. Thanks again to Graystone Action Sports Academy for the hook up.

Props to Lewis Royden and Will Berry from Amfas Skateboards for the filming & editing duties.

Go follow Graystone Action Sports Academy Instagram for more details on opening hours, session times, prices and more.

Sidewalk Sessions – Junction 4 with Eddie Belvedere

Sidewalk Sessions – Junction 4 with Eddie Belvedere

The good folks at Sidewalk Magazine have launched a new video series, ‘Sessions’, documenting some of finest skateparks and spots our country has to offer beginning with Junction 4 Skatepark in Darwen, Blackburn and featuring our man and long time shop rider, Eddie Belvedere.

We were stoked to be involved with the debut of this new web-series and, considering a Thursday evening Skate Night at Junction 4 has seen us through a difficult winter, it didn’t take much motivation to rally up a heavy crew of shop riders and locals.

After driving through the rain and snow it didn’t take long for the Black Sheep Family to off with Eddie traversing his nimble feet over everything Junction 4 has to offer, Grandad Stu Reynolds coping dancing the steepest flat bank available, Aussie import Ricky Davidson charging in his usual understated powerhouse manner, recent flow boy for the three stripes Lucien Costello laying down all manner of complex flatbar combos and Reiss Johnson ending the evening by blasting the pool’s oververt.

Get watching and give thanks to your local indoor park if you’re fortunate enough to have one! Big thanks to Ben Powell, Ryan Gray and the guys at Junction 4 for hooking up an evening well spent!

Vans Park Series Malmo 2017

vans-park-series-malmo-sweden-2017

So the casual question was put out to us at the Black Sheep Family, “Do you fancy going to the Vans Park Series in Malmo Sweden this year…?” so of course it took all of a split second to respond and the next thing we know flight reservations where emailed followed by a loose schedule for our time in sunny Sweden (*please note we got very, very lucky with the Swedish weather as normally it’s pretty much like Manchester just with colder winters!)

The dates where set for the 2017 Vans Park Series in Malmo Sweden and the next thing you know we where coming into land via Copenhagen with a short trip over the infamous Øresund Bridge (go watch the Swedish TV series ‘The Bridge’ if you haven’t already!) For those planning a skate mission to Sweden via the U.K you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know your literally 20 minutes train journey away from the airport to some of Malmo’s finest street spots and ridiculously amazing concrete skate parks.  So of course the first port of call stepping of the train we headed straight down to the Vans park located in Kroksback which is slightly out of the main city center of Malmo. The first sight of the park seriously leaves you questioning yourself, we’ve all seen footage/photos/instagram from the park but to see it in the flesh gives you a whole lot more admiration for any skater stepping up to ride the luscious concrete waves it has to offer.

Of course it was like the who’s who from the skateboard world looking around the deck with skaters literally from all over the World in attendance. And of course Black Sheep Family lifer Andy Scott is now currently classed as a local with his recent move East so it was an added treat to catch up with old ‘In a minute Mr Scott!’

The first day down at Hyllie Kroksback skate-park was a little teaser on how this competition may go over the following two days,  you could see a load of the Pro’s and Am’s just getting used to the place but slowly finding the groove as runs got longer and more technical in the process. Again I was still blown away of how gnarly the park is especially after rushing in for a quick roll around and quickly becoming out of my depth whilst hurtling towards the deep end bowled out section. So it was back to the shade with some powerful coffee to warn off the days early start, then sit back and relax to watch the European’s first day qualifiers that soon escalated from the moments before mellow session!

Time was ticking and the first day skate was over with the talk of the town being a free Corona beer party down the local Street Lab skate shop in central Malmo where the good crew was due to celebrate their shop extension in the shape of a new Vans store in store. Rad to see the Lovenskate guys in attendance doing some one off board printing collaborating both the Vans logo and the locally recognized Street Lab branding.  Massive thanks to the crew in store for the warm welcome and even use of the WiFi to do the obligatory FaceTime call home.

Second day came round quick sharp after our first luxury night in the hotel (not trying to show off but we’re just not used to such surroundings!) and it was the five minute skate in the baking sunshine down towards the epic park and another eye opener walking in to see Ishod Wair casually destroying every piece of transition in his path. Seats where taken and it was time to sit back and watch the days silly skating unfold with some serious names now in attendance including Raven Tershey, Oskar Rozenberg Hallberg, Pedro Barros, Rune Glifberg, Sam Beckett, Alex Sorgente (last years overall Vans Park Series winner) plus many more global rippers.

After the initial day of qualifiers and general mental skating it was looking good for the following day semi’s and then monstrous finals on what was to be another scorching day of sunshine. You probably caught the live screening from the last day but go remind yourselves below with some official Vans Park Series footage capturing all the highlights from all of the above!

French Intern’s Road Trips

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2016

Every summer, THE PLO SKATE CLUB ( France ) organises a Skate trip in France for the kids and in a foreign country for the older ones. Kids travel in France to Skate all the good skateparks and spots our country has to offer. The older ones have to choose a new destination. We’ve been to Spain a few times, the basque country, known for these crazy rad bowls and concrete skateparks.

Algorta’s famous spot

In 2013 a few of us went to Copenhagen for the CPH PRO 2013 with all the pros, then Sweden and finally Germany (kiel) to visit our German friends who’ve been to France a year before.

In 2013, members of the Skate Association decided to go further and take the plane for the US. A decision taken after more than 20 years of work for Skateboarding. The road trip of every skater’s life, the one your thinking about after watching your first video. They make it possible after all these years of patience and dedication for the association, all these demos, contests, kid’s classes, and working day to day at the Skatepark.

Adidas Skateboarding-‘Boost The Bar’-London

Sunday, June 28th, 2015

Gonz_adidas_southbank

Gonz’father. Pic- Andy Horsley @Sidewalk Magazine.

So we we’re fortunate enough to get asked to attend the recent Adidas Skateboarding ‘Boost The Bar’ event along with the epic South Bank demo with pretty much the whole Global Adidas team in attendance.

Serious good times watching the Gonz, Busenitz, Benny Fairfax etc at the historical spot that is the South-bank under croft. Pretty much every inch of the old flag stones got utilized as the the team proceeded to tear it yet another new one. Obvious stand out’s was getting to witness Mark Gonzales just steady cruising but still killing it at a young age of 46, our whole journey down to the big smoke was pretty much focused on the legendary Gonz ‘Video Days’ section when he pretty much opened up Southbank to a whole new world of tricks.

If you’ve not already seen the official Sidewalk Magazine edit from the demo then get your click on here >> Adidas Skateboarding Southbank Demo <<

So after a chilled yet power amped session at Southbank everyone headed over to Mile End Skate Park by various means of transport. The next leg of the fun and frolics in London was the official ‘Boost The Bar’ shop event by Adidas Skateboarding UK. After initial torrential down pours the good old Southern climate came through good and blessed us with a semi dry concrete park including the new obstacle provided especially for the afternoons proceedings.

The actual ‘competition’ was pretty much a chilled session with friends and the Black Sheep Family went through to the final against the host shop Parlour. Even then the banter was high and it proceeded to be general good vibes all round.

Massive thanks to Adidas Skateboarding and our Southern host Parlour Skate Store for the hospitality. No need to tell you the specifics but the booze flowed well into the early hours which left us trailing home Northwards the following morning/night… Big ups to all involved!

Projekts Skatepark Manchester “Pumpcage”

Monday, June 8th, 2015

projekts-skatepark-pump-cage-manchester

If you have never even been to Manchester on a skate mission, you probably would still have heard of the infamous ‘pumpcage’ . From humble wooden beginnings to a now extended concrete jungle with a heated waiting area and cafe facilities , the cage has been an established part of the Manchester skateboard scene for a good ten years, and like the pillars that hold up the Mancunian way above, the cage has become a pillar for the local community. Whether your young or old, a total beginner or would just like some coaching, Projekts Skatepark caters for everyone. Girls only nights, beginners sessions with different age groups, half term skateboard clubs and even group bookings are available. All the staff that work there are super friendly and a very helpful bunch, and in turn are the locals that use the park on a daily basis! There is always a welcoming atmosphere and anyone is encouraged to come and get involved in the session!

The cage has hosted some of the most memorable competitions, jams and demos. From the likes of Red Bulls Mani Mania,  Elements Make It Count 2015 and the forthcoming NASS UK Skate North qualifier. The yearly jams like the summer, Easter,  Halloween and Christmas events always go down a storm with not just locals coming down but attracting skateboarders from all over the country! But things are not just confined to the space in the skate park, the yearly Manchester ‘Weekend In The City’ video competition encourages the entire city and beyond to be skated. Teams such as Cliche, Supra and Emerica have come and done demos along with a host of British companies! ( How good was the Blueprint demo!) How can you forget seeing the likes of Chad Muska, Lizard King, Jerry Hsu and the boss Andrew Reynolds among’st a host of others shredding the cage! There has also been art / photography shows along with  graffiti jams, with the actual pillars inside the park being used as a natural canvas. Expect more things like this going on in the near future.

Apart from the major holidays in the year, the cage is pretty much open seven days a week 364 days a year so there’s no excuse not go for a roll after school, work or even before heading into the glorious Manchester City center!

The skate park is there to used and enjoyed by all so support the scene and lets keep the cage going for the next generation.

Element Skateboards Make It Count Competition

Thursday, April 16th, 2015

Element skateboards have been killing the skateboard game since 1992. It’s a company I grew up with and I couldn’t be more stoked that they are still going strong. Probably stronger than ever, the team consists of some more than familiar faces like Chad Tim Tim, Nyjah Huston, Chad Muska, Ray Barbee, Mark Appleyard, Bam Margera, Madars Apse and loads more. So over the past few years they have been holding the Element Skateboards Make it Count Competition which has been a great success.

It’s a series of amateur skateboarding events that is put on throughout the world to seek out the latest talent skateboarding has to offer. It also promotes the Element message of social awareness, environmental stewardship and positivity. Instead of a cash prize the overall winner is awarded some great memories, a taste of culture from around the world and a possibility for a new found career in skateboarding. A truly unforgettable experience.

This year we see the competition coming to Manchester’s pump cage on Saturday May the 19th. You would be mad to miss out on such a great opportunity on your doorstep. Show your support and spread the word as it could be you or a friend that takes the time to enter and ends up winning something worthwhile. What’s to lose hey..

This year sees Pioneer Skate Park in St.Albans hosting the event. £3000 prize money and  an all expenses paid trip to the European finals is up for grabs! After the UK leg comes to a close on the 26th, the attention turns to Aalast, at the Flesh and Bones Skatepark, the scene of last years finals where Belgium’s own Rampaffairz skateshop just missed out on top spot to fellow countrymen Burnside so expect it to go off at this one! Will the Black Sheep lads be there to take the top spot? ( My moneys on them! Come on lads!!! ) Keep your eyes peeled!
