Emerica footwear was first launched in 1996, and is part of the Sole Tech group of footwear companies, along with Es and Etnies. Emerica’s pro team is home to skaters such as Andrew Reynolds, Bryan Herman, Jerry Hsu, Ed Templeton and 2010’s Thrasher Skater of the Year Leo Romero.

In the early 2000s, the team riders resided in the Emerica mansion in Hollywood. Which was kitted out with quarter pipes, funboxes, and was essentially a paradise for skaters. Emerica have released several influential skate videos over the years, including This is Skateboarding, Stay Gold and Made. Andrew Reynolds has been on the Emerica team for most of his professional skateboarding career, and has released 11 pro shoes with the company. His latest pro model, the Reynolds Low Vulc, is a slim and simple skate shoe, with a vulcanised soul and a cold air intake system.

Emerica benefits from being a part of the Sole Tech group, as it enables them to use a range of technologies developed specifically for skateboarding. The STI research facility is one of the only places worldwide to conduct biomechanical research specifically for skateboarding. Emerica shoes have features such as mesh tongues and side panels, rebound foam insoles, stabilising heel carriages and single upper panels that reduce ripping. Mesh sections keep the shoes lightweight and breathable while heel carriages and foam prevent injury to the feet and ankles.

As well as designing functional skate shoes, Emerica also keep style and aesthetics in mind. The Troubadour, Leo Romero’s pro shoe, was designed as both a shoe to wear for skating or just for style. Emerica are keen collaborators with other skate brands. They have even produced a shoe with Heroin Skateboards founder (and illustrator of the Black Sheep logo) Fos. The wino cruiser features some of Fos’ legendary illustrations. If you are looking for something low key and stylish, which is also great for skating in, it’s worth a pair of Emerica’s.
