Nike SB began officially manufacturing skate shoes over a decade ago, however the use of regular Nike footwear by skateboarders dates back to the 1980s. With a small number of specialised skate shoes available Nike basketball shoes, particularly the Blazer, Dunk and Michael Jordan 1 became popular as a durable and easy accessible models. The higher collar of these shoes also proved effective in aiding ankle support and still continue to be favourite high-top silhouettes to this day.

Nike Skateboarding launched in March of 2002 with a team consisting of Gino Iannucci, Reece Forbes, Richard Mulder and Danny Supa and these riders initial team run of personalised colourway SB Dunks are still highly sought after by sneaker collectors. Many of Nike SB’s quickstrikes are still in demand in sneaker communities and have been instrumental in the emergence of shoe collecting culture. Perhaps most notably is the ‘Tiffany’ Dunk Low released collaboration with Diamond Supply Co in 2005 and again as a Dunk High in 2015.

The team has expanded massively since inception, with Nike SB’s roster now hosting Paul Rodriguez, Eric Koston and Stefan Janoski - all of whom also have pro model shoes. P-Rod was the first Nike SB rider to receive a shoe in 2005 and has almost annually released a different signature model since. Eric Koston’s shoes have ranged from the simple, golf inspired Koston 1 (which has since been given the Hyperfeel treatment) to more technical and soccer influenced Koston 3 in 2016. Stefan Janoski’s signature shoe quickly became a staple of skate shop walls and a favourite amongst swoosh fans due to it’s less is more approach, comfort, utility as both a performance skateboard shoe and smart/casual item of footwear.

In 2007 Nike Skateboarding released their first full length skateboard video ‘Nothing But The Truth’ with full parts from Brian Anderson, Wieger Van Wageningen, Omar Salazar, Todd Jordan and Lewis Marnell (who sadly passed away in January of 2013). From 2012 to 2016, Nike SB have bi-annually released an instalment to The SB Chronicles series directed by Jason Hernandez. Due to their large roster, each video focused on a small selection of different individuals, such as transition beast Grant Taylor who took the closing part of The SB Chronicles Volume 1, also earning himself Thrasher Magazine’s coveted Skater of The Year title shortly afterwards. The SB Chronicles Volume 2 introduced the smooth styled talents of Donovon Piscopo to the world, showcased the technical mastery of Luan Oliveira and rounded things of with Real Skateboards’ Ishod Wair who would also go on to a much deserved SOTY win. The SB Chronicles Vol. 3 included Cory Kennedy, Kevin Bradley, Karsten Kleppan and even a full part from legend Lance Mountain to tie the trilogy up. After collaborating with Quartersnacks on a quick strike Dunk Low in 2015, Nike SB have also collaborated on videos with Quartersnacks and continued to show their support of East Coast skateboarding. Johnny Wilson has produced several web edits backed by the swoosh featuring East Coast heads Cyrus Bennett, Bobby Worrest, Max Palmer, Polar connection Hjalte Halberg in videos such as Beef Patty, Paych and Core.

Today Nike use their sports research and extensive resources to make some of the best technical skate shoes on the market. Whether it’s the simplicity of the Janoski, classical look of the Blazer or something more technical like the Hyperfeel Bruin that takes your fancy - we’re loaded up and sure to something to cater to whatever you are after.
